1983 Schwinn Mountain Canti brakes
I'm restoring (getting it to good riding condition) a 1983 Schwinn Sierra 10-speed. The brakes are listed as "Dia-Compe 860 canti".
My question is...do you know if modern cantilever brakes will work, or could I switch to V-brakes (I will switch brake levers as well)? I'll save the cantis for originality sake (bike is 100 original otherwise), but for a riding bike I was never too fond of them.

Have to ask, what's wrong with using the DC 860's ? I am building up an early 80's H Sierra and went with the DC brakes and love how they work. But then, I like setting up old canti brakes.
Would love to see more pics of the Sierra.

I remember riding them when younger and having a bear of a time getting them adjusted and they never stopped well. Perhaps modern pads makes up for the stopping (I'm assuming post-type that'll fit these are still available).
That's not my bike up above, but it is one like it (at least as far as the brakes go).
I'm honestly not sure if I want to try and reuse the vintage parts or update it slightly. I might leave the gearing as I have no idea what I can do with the 10-speed stuff, but I thought at least I'd do the brakes and make that part of the bike solid.

DC brakes are just fine, replacing the pads are a great idea ! Post style are still available and a smart upgrade.
