your dream wheels?

Ok, so now that i've used my handy new employee discount to get my sugino 75's (what a difference... so worth it) it's time to build my dream wheels.

I ride a grey steamroller, by the way, for the fashion-concious.

I'm thinkin' black phil wood hubs with black spokes (no idea what kind) and some sweet black rims, but i'm not sure-- i was thinkin' open pros but i know i can do better. i don't have brakes, so i have lots of options.

i really want some pink phils, but i know that's just not real possible...

shants 04-18-05 07:59 AM

as is fashionable these days, the deep v's are probably a good choice for rims. the sidewalls are almost always machined (even on the black rims). i think it's pretty hot, but who knows. i've heard tale of there being deep v's that are fully black, but the velocity site doesn't show the deep v's as having that option.

there's my two cents.

chimblysweep 04-18-05 08:02 AM

if only i could get deep v's without all that advertisey writing all over 'em...

shants 04-18-05 08:06 AM

i'm pretty sure that you can easily peel off those decals. i know that it's quite easy to peel them off of their aerohead rims. might get a little residue, but nothing that some rubbing alcohol or goo gone won't deal with easily.

Pink Phils with black rims and black spokes? I just got my dream wheels.

High Flange SLR Phil's to CXP-30's.

I agree, partially. I would cast my vote though for white rims:

Pink tires anyone?

chimblysweep 04-18-05 08:48 AM

where do you get pink phils from? maybe i'm just not trying hard enough here...

Velocity seems pretty flexible. I sent them an email asking for white 700's and they said "No Problem" I have heard of other people calling and asking for colored non machined rims and got them. They have a lot more than what they list in their catalog and online. Just send them an email and ask, I think you can find what you want. I like the look of the pink hubs. I am building up White Velocity Deep V's with black spokes and it looks awesome. goodluck!

seconded on these!

Do they make white phils?

m.

This is what I know: Marcus at Yojimbo's had three pairs of these about two months ago. He's only got a road set left. Apparently, Phil Wood are starting to experiment with anodizing due to demand - I've read threads where there are green and blue Phils out in SF, Freewheel I think.

Marcus is getting some anodized in a deep red now, and for what I can tell - you just request it. Not sure if you can do this on your own or if you have to do it through a shop. It costs an extra $40 per hub.

dolface 04-18-05 11:30 AM

i've got mine; sliver phils laced to cxp33's

i've seen, with my own eyes, pink, green, and blue phils, all at freewheel hayes in san francisco.

infestedguy1 04-18-05 11:52 AM

i just got mine on the spicer. fixed/fixed phils laced to the velocity aeroheads with black dt spokes. i honestly can't believe how smooth and solid feeling this wheelset is. on the steamroller, i have pauls laced to the alex r390 rims, those are nice feeling, but holy crap, the phils are amazing. i never wouldve thought what a difference a really GOOD wheelset makes, but now i know. oh, and absntr, your bike is uber-hot, it looks amazing and i'm glad you're riding again.

redfooj 04-18-05 11:57 AM

all black frame, black miche supertype post, black brooks swallow/swift saddle, black 3t quill stem, b123 bars - black keirin grips, selle storica saddle.. or black selle royal, purple phil hubs & king headset, black spokes & anodized open pro rims, either black or purple nipples. mmmmmmmm nipples

(deep aero rims are ugly... my opinion... too obtrusive)

Judah 04-18-05 11:58 AM

Black phils laced to Saavedra arrow rims. Unfrotunately, I haven't been able to track down this mythical rim. If anyone knows of one for sale, let me know. I had to settle for Deep Vs...

absntr 04-18-05 12:04 PM

Having put the Phils through some heavy duty riding this weekend I can concur: they are smooth.

Originally Marcus thought he had a lead on some deep Campy Atlanta rims (34mm v section) in silver and I originally ordered a silver Phil hubset. His supplier was wrong though and so I switched the build out to the black/pink combo.

On another note: does anyone know anyone who's ridden the Storkia saddle? Aesthetically they appeal to me, but I have no idea how they hold up performance wise or if the cost is justified.

jim-bob 04-18-05 12:05 PM

I wouldn't mind replacing my respaced-to-135mm Sansin hub with a nice Phil KISS-OFF double-fixed. I haven't really looked into new 26" rims, though.

enantiodroma 04-18-05 01:51 PM

DTSwiss R1.1 's are sweet ass rims, of got a set on my touring bike. there's nothing on the market i'd otherwise use. it's what i use when i build wheels for my langster

auk 04-18-05 03:10 PM

My current dream/reality wheels are the Suntour Superbe Pros that I have laced to the Aeroheads. If dream wheels, same hubs with some Fir or Ambrosio tubbies with the rear wheels tied and soldered.

isotopesope 04-18-05 03:21 PM

i currently own two of my dream wheelsets:
i have mavic ellipses on my bianchi pista and dura-ace 7700 rear/7800 front hubs laced to 28 hole bronze cxp30's on my guerciotti. it's gross.

i also would love some of the new limited gold pauls laced to some gold velocity deep v's. i would also love some dura-ace 7600's laced to anything. even a hairdryer.

Need to tell somebody who cares... my dream wheels are shipping today. It's okay to have more than one dream, right? Silver 32h, high flange Phils laced to open pros. Should get them Thursday. This is what they're gonna hold up: Pinarello lugged steel.

BostonFixed 04-19-05 04:18 PM

My dream wheels would be real track hubs, not the suicide ones I am running on my bikes now...
Something like IROs with some good rims; better than the wobbly single wall POS's that I have on there now...mmn IRO base wheelset

that bike looks amazing. an all silver wheelset is really going to complete it... are those 3ttt bars?

alchemist 04-19-05 04:31 PM

thanks... they are 3TTT bars, and stem (scored that one off ebay for $7). my favorite part is the seatpost... salsa makes a really nice post.
