H Plus Son
I need to get a new set of wheels and have been wondering if the H plus sons (tb14 or archetypes) are worth it? I have seen some cxp22's for pretty cheap. Is that wide rim profile very noticeable when cornering?
IF not Hplus sons, are mavic open pros worth the extra $70? I'm a heavy guy and need something that will last longer than 6 months. The bike is a daily commuter and a sturdy wheel, and set and forget bearings are the main concern. I like the mavics better aesthetically.

Archetypes stand out of the 3 because they are wider profile rims. Which leads to it having advantages over the other 2.
For starters you will have better handling, corner better, and improved ride quality.
Also, your weight will be spread out a tad bit more on a wider rim which may help them last longer for a heavier rider.

TB14's and Archetypes are both 23mm rims. I just got some Archetypes laced to Phil's and I'm loving them. They are very nice rims and the finish on them is superior to Mavic's in my opinion.

Haha I got them confused with the SL42.
Archetypes would be the beefier rim though with more surface area on the rim profile.

Open Pro used to be the benchmark rim to compare all rims to. Mavic hasn't updated the alloy formula for years, and it is brittle(well, becomes brittle with time) compared to more modern offerings. Was great, now technically mediocre. Not worth the extra dough.

Both are great rims and build up nicely. I think it comes down to asthetic preference. Does an aero rim fit the bike or a box section rim? BTW, the grey anodized versions of either looks rad with a gumwall tire.

I have the polished 32H TB14 set laced to Formula Hubs with 25mm Vittoria Rubino Pros and the ride is fantastic. They are also a very good looking rim, if that matters to you.

Here is a crappy photo of my rando bike with the grey TB14's and 32mm gumwall paselas. The fenders kindof block it but they look great.

Yes to all of this. I'm also a huge fan of hard-anodized/gumwall combos. If you're buying new, my vote goes to Archetypes with some high-flange hub. Should be bombproof.

Anyone have experience with Sun CR18's?
22.5mm wide .5 shy of the TB14's and archetypes, double wall box section. 36 spokes. Good reviews on bikeforums.
Damn that's a nice big block.

Fantastic bang for the buck rim. Excellent quality, very round, uniform, nearly invisible seam, nice finish. I recently built a 36H rear wheel with one, and it was super easy.

I also agree on the CR18's. I have a 27" 36 hole set laced to Shimano 600 tircolor hubs that have been great for years.

my cr-18s have been ridden on singletrack, horrifying pothole roads, up and down mountains, tboned by an 83 year old man, and commuted on for 3000 miles in 110º down to 0º. ive basically done everything but set them on fire and shoot them.
theyre still dead true and i only had to replace one spoke
if you want something bombproof and are looking to save a buck, get them.
ps:
thats the $25,000 printer i almost broke last year
