Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Quitting My Job to Build Bikes ~ Who's With Me?

After seeing this auction I've decided to resign, from whatever the hell I do, to build fixed gear bikes...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...150559528&rd=1

$370?!

PS - I know Armitage & Clark St when I see it.

PPS - I give the seller credit because he clearly states that it's not a track bike.

Clearly the key to his success is putting 5 billion photos in the auction. That adds like 200$ to the perceived value.

This is nuts. Its got 27" old wheels, bad tire and a suicide rear hub!! From his descriptions it ain't no nice track hub in the back. I quote:

'Iíve trued each wheel, redished and respaced the rear wheel so that the chainline is straight."

"Wheels: 27 inch clincher light alloy rims laced to Sunshine alloy hubs with quick release axle front & solid axle rear. Tires are Super Record 27x1 1/8. The tries will keep your rolling for a while, but they are kind of dry."

I'm just dumbfounded at the price. What on earth is going on here?!?!

I think yer right. It looks like a few guys knew what this bike was, but they bailed at $100.
Every bid since that point have been the seller's drinking buddies.

Even with the shill bidding, some of the "real-looking" bidders were still bidding all the way up past $200. Crazy ish man. I say we start buying the beaters at Ye Olde (or whatever they're calling themselves now) and locktiting and ebaying them after taking 95348905 pictures of them. Of course a 500 word essay about the bike seems to also help...

That looks like an old 80's Schwinn Traveller frame which didn't even cost that much new if I remember correctly.

Bike-ninja is a BF member. All of his conversions go for big bucks (relative to the bikes). Maybe he'll share his secret, but years of training could be involved before one masters the style.

The camo bar tape means it is hard-core. Hence more valuable.

Seriously though, like they say, something is worth exactly what someone will pay for it. No more, no less! If someone buys that bike for 370$, then that is exactly what it is worth. If someone won't buy yours for that much, then it isn't worth that much. It doesn't matter how much YOU think it is worth, since it isn't your wallet in question.

People appreciate details and photos in auctions, I don't think that is a problem. I mean, you aren't paying by the pixel here. I'd rather buy from someone who is overly verbose than someone who just says, "Schwinn conversion, no sticker, camo bar tape, old tires, the end."

People who make money selling things on ebay aren't geniuses, they just pay attention to the details, and give people what they want. You could do it too! Of course, once everyone is doing it, then no one will be able to make money on it, and you'll have to find the next trendy thing to sell.

peace,
sam

I got a SS conversion that looks hella nice, probably put that up soon since its too big.

Do you think that since summer is right around the corner prices are going up?
I'm not a big watcher of ebay auctions so I don't know the trends

"Riding fixed gear improves form and the increased cadence gives you sexy supple legs."

best line in the whole thing, hands down. i'd say it's worth the $370 by itself.

I've peed off that bridge where two of the bikes are pictured. After a good run through the park you need to mark your spot.

So what is the point. I find nothing wrong with his pitch or listing. It looks quite accurate and there appears to be nothing misleading. I have sold a lot of parts on E-Bay and I was amazed by the sale prices I got. If you don't want to bid on it don't. Just because you don't think it is worth the current bid does not mean it is not worth it to the bidder. People can be quite dumb, so what should the seller do. Tell the winning bidder that its only worth $50 bucks and give a rebate. Duh......So I put a frameset on E-Bay and start the bidding at $1.00 and get $200. So am I doing something evil cause I got $200 and expected to get $50. Not hardly.

Not the point - you can see the pattern of shill bidding. And that is the point. Jacking up your prices by having your friends or an alternate username is all too common.
