Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

help me, I'm curious.

Before I start this, let me give a bit of a disclaimer. This has nothing to do with fixed gear. The only reason I am posting here is that you people seem like nice guys and you know what you are talking about.

Anyway, here is the question. I have an bike that I consider to be a bit of a beater. It is a 97 Gary Fisher mtn bike onto which I placed fenders and small slick tires then proceeded to beat to hell. I am trying to get rid of it by way of giving it to a friend of mine. Unfortunately he is gainfully employed (unlike most people I know) and insists on paying me. I need to know what this bike is worth.

Here is the score. it has a pretty damn good double butted cromo frame. The bad news is that it desperately needs a new front wheel, brake cables, and a chain. Somewhat less desperately it needs a new large chainring, derailer cables cassette and pedals.

I have told him that I will do the work on it for the price of parts, what can I possibly charge this fellow that will relieve his conscience and not be ripping him off.

If he is a friend you could get him to buy the parts and a stack of beers and then come and hang out with you while you do the work. That way you get some beers and he gets to learn a bit about how to fix up his new bike.

Plus you get to cross thread things cos you are pissed...

Well I don't know about you but last night I was pretty pissed.

A few months ago I gave a friend $75 bucks for an old Schwinn Paramount mtb. It is a really nice lugged Waterford frame, super light weight. It had decent components which of course I proceded to tear right off of it and it needed a front wheel. The frame needs to be painted too. Over all the bike was beat up but still a quality piece of work. $75 bucks is not a lot to put down on a decent working oldie but goodie ride if you ask me...

Realised a bit too late that there could be transatlantic misunderstandings of my phraseology. Hopefully the meaning came through: bikes + beer = fun in many different ways...

Completely off topic, onelesscar have you got your bagaboo bag yet? I ordered one from Tomas so just waiting for him to make it. Should be sweet.
