It's not really a big deal, but I might take you up on that at some point! I'm slowly fixing up the beater into a nicer ride.

I've used both ACS and WI freewheels on my SS. As Kindaslow said, if you have a chance to compare the two side by side, the difference in quality is astounding and immediately apparent.

The ACS ones were complete junk compared to WI, granted I think I payed less than $10 for them... On the ACS there was a ton of play in all directions, particularly side to side, and after less than 100 miles I could feel the engagement getting weak. Have had zero issues/complaints with the WI so far, and I fully expect to get thousands of miles out of it before it needs to be serviced.

Sure the WI is more expensive, but in terms of actual value, they cant be beat.

Wow. I was not aware there is so much to know about freewheels! I robbed the Shimano off my Kilo for my recent Bianchi build. I would like to have one installed again for the days I care not to ride the Kilo fixed.

Hence the reason for the thread.

You guys learned me good.

I just looked at your site and noticed that they go down to 13T. I thought 16T was the minimum for normal english threaded hubs. How do they do that ?

My WI arrived in a little blue box, with a fluffy liner. I guess that is our version of something from Tiffany's.

im using an ECHO TR on my surly right now, only 150 miles in so no long term experience

its not a sealed bearing version like a WI, and i already know it isnt perfectly round

108 POI doe. its like a dope exhaust for my bike

i got it cuz it was ~1/2 the price of a WI and i wanted to know if higher POI felt that much better (it really does)

when it dies or i feel like changing the ratio ill be getting a WI trials

That AC Racing 15t FW has not been made in years and the stock of leftover NOS is long gone so don't get too excited. Not to mention they were not all that great to begin with...

Sure. When I was riding really hard, or taking off quickly from a stop it just didn't feel very solid and felt like it might start slipping. I think what happened was the amount of play became great enough that the pawls barely engaged the ratchet teeth inside of the freewheel or that only one pawl was actually engaging. Or maybe the pawl springs were just really crappy and weak and weren't keeping enough tension on the pawls. Could have been a combination of both. After I removed it and installed the WI, I just threw it away and didn't try to disassemble it to investigate.

Thanks for the help, guys. I just may save up a bit for the WI. Not in a real hurry as I could always rob the freewheel off the Bianchi if I had to.

I got a WI rear hub and splined cog and was ASTOUNDED by the quality of both. Made in the USA too.
