    did I wreck my hub?

    I've got an issue with my Paul rear hub that I'm having trouble diagnosing. Maybe it's not the hub, but I think it is.

    Only when I'm riding and only when I'm cranking pretty hard I hear a periodic metallic thud sound coming from my rear wheel area. It isn't loud but it is pretty audible. I cannot seem to make the sound happen at lower speeds. Because I need to be moving and working to make the sound it could be from my cranks or bb or something else, too, I suppose.

    I'm wondering if this is the sound of my bearings dying.

    Paul high flange, new chain, Sugino 75 cranks and Sugino bb.

    I'm taking it to get looked at tomorrow, but I wondered if anyone here had any ideas. thanks.

    I had a similar issue with my Surly bearings (rear hub) so I replaced them and it all went away. Just like my childhood...

    Sounds like a bearing - get em switched out for cheap and see if that solves it.

    Sounds like it could be the chain. I only say this because I had been hearing a mysterious thud from my drivetrain since last Saturday and I couldn't figure out what it was. Last night I was on my way out for a ride and the chain broke(scary, scary experience). It's funny because you can feel it in your feet and sometimes it feels like it is coming from the BB or even the non-drive side crank. If you added/removed links in your chain recently I would consider a new chain if you can't find a weak/seized link in your existing one..

    a disassembled bianchi lynx i'm gonna convert to ss, a felt roadie with carbon fork, and my baby blue peugeot roadie conversion. a couple sizes too large.

    might chain tension have something to do with it? that is, if it is super tight or not?

    Ack - that's true, as jinx and neuron said - could be the chain binding. Got a spare chain to try?

    When you say new chain do you mean you just replaced it? Is the rest of the drive train old?

    Check a couple of things.

    1. Chain ring bolts
    2. Take the wheel off and spin it while holding onto the axle to see if you can feel any grinding when it's not under load. While you may not get the clunk, you may be able to feel if something is awry with the hub.

    I had a similar problem that was a result of a bearing that had split. Cheap carbon bearings!

    the drive chain is about 600 miles old, including the chain. pretty new. the chain is kind of tight and has been for a while, but there is still play in it... it is not taught, but it makes a straight line, if you know what I mean.

    I'll give it a once over and try all the suggestions you all have made. Thanks!

    by straight line, you mean it doesn't sag or droop, right? i'm guessing you're not talking about chainline...

    btw, do you want some paint?
