Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

compliments

I have heard stories of people asking how you ride that thing, or how you get up hills, or how you brake (for those of you who ride brakeless) or whatever, but what amazing compliments have you gotten?

Yesterday, only day three of my new commuting to work with the Pista, I was in the left lane at a stoplight waiting to turn left and a guy pulled up next to me. I think he checked me out, and then checked my bike out, and yelled "Hey," to get my attention.

I looked over and he asked me what it meant that I only had one gear. "It means I don't ever shift gears," I said, "and this particular gear means I don't ever coast, I don't ever stop pedaling."

He just looked at me and said, "Daaaaaaaaaaamn." really low. It was great.

Once a friend told me that he saw me riding my bike and that I looked "as happy as a dog with its head hanging out of a car window." I thought that was a nice thing to say.

i was out on my usual lunchtime loop, and i caught up to a middle-aged guy on a fancy trek. as we took off from the light he complimented me on the fixie, asked how far i was riding, and if i had a freewheel on the bike.

i told him 20 miles, and no.

he looked over at me and said "you're an animal!", shifted gears and dropped me like a bad habit.

that guy was STRONG!

this doesn't involve anyone in a car but it does involve a cyclist. the other day i was trackstanding through a light and this lycra-roadie bro was stopped at the light in the other direction and he gave me the weirdest look..you know how a dogs head goes sideways and it gets that dumb look on its face when it seems something interesting..yeah that's the look the guy gave me. there really aren't any fixed gear riders in this area at all so it must have taken him a second to realize how i was doing it.

After a few moments of bemused elation, I soon felt disgusted, humilitated, and ashamed at having been objectified in such a horrible way...damn chicks in vans.

BTW, for those of you keeping score, I was wearing my Mapei kit and riding my road bike...ha!

Well, I do believe riding a SS got me out of quite a bit of trouble at one point b/c the security guard was just amazed I was biking up that hill with one gear. Well long story short, riding a shortcut through a place that was closed at night and I got caught. That place is a pretty nice hill too, somewhere around 400 feet of elevation gain in not too long of a distance. He basically said "It closes at dusk, and do you have only one gear on that thing?"

see, as a chick myself, i would consider many of those comments not as compliments but catcalls and ignore them ... maybe it's just my city-toughened knee-jerk reaction to hecklers or maybe i just need to learn how to take a compliment.

Thursday afternoon on my way back in for a double shift:

"That's a pretty bike!"

-From a woman on a bike-

Gave me a bit of a wake up smile for a while.
