Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Bigshot Fixed Gear

I know, get a Kilo TT.
I don't have $400. If I did, I would have bought the Kilo TT already.
I have craigslist. I scope it every day, because I cannot ride this thruster (for real) for another day, and I simply cannot go back to a geared bicycle.

BIGSHOT FIXED GEAR/FREE WHEEL BICYCLE

Obviously a hipster-owned bicycle. The guy is willing to sell it to me for $150.
Anyone have thoughts on this bike at that price point?. Just how crummy are the wheels on these things?

That bike kinda sucks but worth the asking price for the crank arms alone.

Who puts Sugino 75s on a Big Shot???

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I noticed that. I'm sure he brought it to some LBS in Brooklyn that ripped him off. Let's pretend the cranks are only worth 1/3 what they are actually worth, since that's not my real concern. How bad do you think the wheels are on this thing?
How much better of a ride is this going to be than a Thruster? I'm inclined to think it's night and day. I'll of course be test riding it.

Why not?

Seems a bit dramatic. It's just riding a bike, not life in prison.

Alright, you got me. I strongly prefer riding a fixed gear. Riding anything with a freewheel feels weird to me now. I live in Florida where it's completely flat. I only need one speed, and the fixed gear is both fun and feels nicer for my body. I don't have explanation beyond that.

I just want a nicer bike, and $400 is not in the reality of my budget. I'm looking for something that is a considerable upgrade from my Thruster (which I got for $40 on Craigslist, and knew what I was getting into - it was just my first fixed gear, so I didn't want to spend). I know there is "better for the money" than a new Big Shot. No doubt. But since this isn't new, I'm trying to get some info on the quality of specific parts, when the price is not part of the equation.

$150 for a complete and ride-able bicycle is a reasonable price, pretty much unless it's a Wal-Mart POS. I'm just trying to gauge where the quality of these components really stand. When I got the thruster, I took it all apart and rebuilt it with a little more skill (and a lot more love). The front hub had 10 bearings on one side, 9 bearings on the other. Needless to say, I'm not trying to go sideways here and get something else that's almost this deplorable.

That bigshot will likely be an improvement over the thruster. Maybe not a huge one, but I think it would be an improvement no less. Disclaimer: I have no personal experience with either.

If I were on your budget, I'd buy the bike. Then immediately start saving for a nicer frame to put those 75's on. Look at it this way - You'd be buying one of the best track cranksets at like half of retail and just so happen to get the rest of the bike as a bonus.

What ever became of "I hear Bigshot bikes are nice" around here?

Yeah - who does put 75s on a Bigshot? But speaking as a SoFla (Ft Laudy) inhabitant myself...I can only say - how can you go wrong for that bike for $150 with that crank and is ridable if you don't mind the silly trim? Specially considering the crap that's generally for sale around here?

I ride up A1A past Delray occasionally - feel free to contact me if I can be of service...

@IAmSam: I don't have enough posts to send you a PM, I'm not sure what kind of service you are offering(?), but thank you. You could PM me with details and email if you want.

No, that's cool. Sorry if I came across as insulting. Wasn't my intent.

Totally get it. You want a fixed gear. That's all there is to it.

I had a BigShot. Bought it brand new. It was alright, not the greatest, heavy, cheap parts on it. For that price, it isn't bad, and will be an upgrade over a Thruster. What size is it? I didn't see that listed. And the cranks....heh. When I upgraded my crank it was to an Origin8 and it was night and day over the POS that came on the bike.

I'd buy that bike and then save up another 100 and try to snag some wheels off CL, so for 250 you'd have a decent bike.

75s on a Bigshot? I don't quite get it but yeah it those are real 75s I would say go for it. The cranks would be worth it and the bike while a heap of steamy pile will be rideable.

+1 Give it a once over, and if there's nothing stupid or irreversibly wrong with it, might as well buy.

BRAND NEW ORIGIN 8 SINGLE SPEED- $180 OBO

A better choice? Just popped up.
Now I'm tempted to go pick up both, to swap the cranks, and resell the big shot for what I paid.

Then I'm not recouping any money. Looking to not spend over $150 here. If I'm buying and selling and making my money back, that's different.
