Online Purchases

I bought a lot of stuff today on the internet.
I mean, not a LOT, but some.

I bought some from Harris Cyclery, some from Nashbar, and finished up with Businesscycles.

I had the nicest experience with John at Businesscycles.
I spend considerable time at his website, trying to figure things out from the pictures.
Now that I've talked to him, I'd like to give him more business.

I hear people say the same thing about Tony at IRO.

I'd like to hear about other people's good experiences buying online or by phone.

For what its worth, Performance has a very kind return policy. Basically if anything is defective or otherwise damaged due to failure they will accept the return and pay the shipping.

However, I get the feeling that you are talking more on the small scale. IRO is good. Harris is okay. I don't have a ton of Internet, but not huge company experience.

What did you get?

uhhh... pics?

I was actually just at John's shop (Business Cycles) this afternoon looking for some old MKS chain tugs. The type with the internal allen bolt instead of the newer external 10mm bolt. His website says he doesn't got em anymore, but he had em at his shop =)

My Business Cycles order just showed up as well! I even ordered from John on a Sunday - which I think is damn cool.

New phil lockring and some funky grips for me, and new FSA chainring and chain for the BF. Now just waiting for the new phil cog to finally be released.

Spicer.....I wish I could remember their names. It was a guy and a girl though that run it
They were great and really flexible. When I bought INKDWHEELS a track stem for Christmas, the girl called and told me that he was walking through like 2 feet of snow to get it to the post office in time because they roads were to bad to drive on. Nice folks and great stuff.

Bikeophile 05-06-05 05:36 PM

IF you talked to a guy at Spicer it was likely Gene (Gene Spicer). Before I setup my own website I used to buy from Gene a lot. In fact my own track bike is still a custom Spicer frameset. Super nice guy

They are also notorious for letting you order items that they do not have in stock, nor will ever re-stock.

I just ordered a killer deal for shoes and pedals for a commuter rig- they had NEITHER in stock.

The guys at Webcyclery are awesome also. They have great customer service.

redfooj 05-06-05 06:22 PM

iro is nice at responding to emails
never had a problem with nashbar... they've always been timely. yesterday, it was over the top. i bought a pair of pedals around noon... at 5pm, they sent an email saying that the product had shipped out at 3pm...

performance was hit or miss for me.. they usually arent as speedy as nashbar is

The Webcyclery here in Bend, OR?

If so, they provide great customer service in person, too.

By the way, I bought Shimano sandals, Wellgo SPD cleats, MKS chaintugs, a Hozan hook spanner, a 17t EAI cog, a Wheels Mfg. chain whip, and a Campy peanut butter wrench.

ort 05-06-05 06:39 PM

Yup. The very same guys.

HereNT 05-06-05 06:53 PM

Peanut butter wrench?

The hozan tools are awsome - my lockring tool is freaking SWEET!

Mmmm, campy peanut butter wrench. That's a tool that's far prettier than it needs to be, and I love it for that.

Lately, though, I've been using this :

IMHO...

Good:
Tony (IRO)
John (Business Cycles)
Kevin/MeanTodd (Webcyclery)
Speedgoat
Excel Sports

Bad:
Performance / Nashbar

Ugly:
Trackbikeking

Harris is a fine OBS with a decent selection, but cross country shipping takes too long for my tastes. Both Tony @ IRO and John @ Business Cycles have been great, special ordered some parts of John and got a good deal / got them quickly.

marcusbandito 05-07-05 06:24 AM

I live near Harris Cyclery and those guys are great. Its a small shop and they are usually slammed when I have time to stop by. So, oddly enough, I just order things online and pick it up at the store to save shipping. They are always really appreciative.

I've had very good experiences with the people at Competitive Cyclist. Not exactly fixie-oriented, but responsive and friendly.

Wow, that's cool. Is that a 15mm? Where did you get it?

*DING!*

Potus is absolutely correct. It's made by paragon, up in lovely richmond california, and is indeed titanium.

They offer a military discount, too!
