Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bike to Work Week...

Oh yeah...it starts Monday. Who's with me? I'll be riding the fix since it's the only bike I have left (shipped the others off to AK already). I got my knog lights on and ready to go...those are some bright little suckers. Should be fun especially since I have PT at 0700...damn military. I'll probably be dead by the time I get in there. It's a 12 mile trip each way...with a slight uphill & usually a nice headwind the whole way back...yay.

I'm pretty much forcing myself to ride all week...we'll see how it pans out. I have my car "sold" though I'm not transferring it over until 24 May, so I'm going to try not to drive it. www.weather.com shows rain Mon-Wed, but the local Italian weather sites show partly cloudy with rain in late afternoon, which is how it's been the last couple weeks.

Good luck to you all and I hope you have a good BTW week.

I will be up bright and early (and severly hungover) volunteering at a bike-to-work station in SF. So if you are commuting make sure to stop be and say hello!! Free bagels and coffee, and I think other goodies to.

I will be at the arguello and cabrillo station. I want to see some Richmond faces!

edit: This is on the actual day: thursday 5/19

I'm not working next week, but when I'm not moving into my new place, I'll be riding my bike.

Well, I'm one for two.

I have all kinds of excuses though. I'm trying to "outprocess" the military base here and they make it pretty difficult (run here, run there...hurry up and wait, etc.) Of course, all of this while still trying to get a days work in kinda makes it difficult to make 15/20 minute trips to/from everywhere.

So, I biked in Monday, but had to drive today since I had to run home and grab the cat+carrier to take her to the vet and then run her home. I'll be catching a ride in tomorrow to take care of some "outprocessing". Thursday and Friday are definites. Thursday I'm meeting some friends (one riding his fixie...which I didn't know he had!) at the cafe for cappucini & brioche before work and depending on how that goes, it might be a repeat on Friday.

I've come to the conclusion that it kinda sucks living out in the boondocks. I'll be glad when I move to Anchorage next month and I'm back in a decent size city.

Fixie content: The first commute to/from didn't kick my ass too bad...I beat the rain home, which was a good thing. I rode 46:17. I'll probably flip/flop on over to my 15 since my friend I'm riding with Thursday is a hammer. I can stop quite easily, but I'll probably pick a front brake up for added insurance. I really miss my clipless pedals, but maybe it just takes time to get used to the clips. I hit a slug and caught that in the chin which was kind of gross.

Ciao for now.

Dave

i bike to work every day.

the good thing about bike to work week/day is the freebies. like free bagels. i bet far more people would bike to work every day if they gave away bagels every day. but hell, i deserve a bagel, at least once a year, for not adding to traffic jams, not causing oil wars, and for not taking up space on the already jam-packed metro.
