Tiny Wabi fit issues
I've wanted a Wabi for years now and one recently popped up on CL that falls within my meager budget. The problem is that it's a 49 as measured c-c. I'm 5'11" with a 32.5 inseam. I currently ride an 80's cannonade crit bike that is 53 c-t and has 54cm top tube.
The Wabi's top tube is a wee bit shorter at 53cm. My biggest concern is the standover which is about 30". I spoke to someone at Wabi about this, who was great, but I didn't really press him because they won't see a cent from the sale. He mentioned I might have to stretch the bike out with a longer stem and possibly an offset seat post. I'm a new to all this and have the flexibility of someone in the prime of their 40's. I'm really concerned that I won't be able to get the bars up high enough which will force me into a really steep and uncomfortable position and/or potentially damaging my knees. Can anyone shed some light on stretching a bike in this manner and the how having huge amounts of extended stems can impact the ride? Any and all help is greatly appreciated. |
The answer you probably don't want to hear is that you should wait and get a bike that fits properly. 49cm and 5'11" doesn't sound like a good fit.
How does stem length affect a bike?s steering and handling? | CyclingTips Standover height is not relevant. Ignore it. |
Seems like a TINY frame for a guy 5'11".
If everything else, stem and spacers remains the same as your current bike, your saddle to bar drop will be just over an inch greater. You can buy a stem with a greater angle and/or add spacers if the fork's steer tube is long enough. What is your concern about standover? You'll be towering over the bike. |
I ride the 42/650c right now, but, have considered the 49 for a "townie" setup with some left over 700c wheels. I'm 5' 2". I can't imagine being 5'11" and considering this bike.

I'm the same height as you with the same inseam. I ride a 56 cm c-c on my road bike. I can't imagine a 49 cm.

I'm 5'11" and ride a 55cm wabi. Richard said I was between the 55 and the 58. I picked the 55 since I mainly use the Wabi for rides under 3 hours and don't mind the 7cm saddle to bar drop for those distances. I recommend taking a pass on the 49cm.

Thanks everyone! Glad I asked, this was very helpful.
