Bikes: Zebrakenko (nishiki knock-off) fixed. Its all broke though. Now, some other old, unidentified japanese frame, freshly spray-painted black(kinda hot). Puch, ss...or is that fffda7th's?

Loctite and the likes
So, I am running 40x13 on a bumbike setup. I had the LBS Loctite it after I stripped it with clips. Now, I am thinking of changing cogs to 15-someone said that would= 48x18. They can do this, no? But while I am at it, should I just go 48x18, or is there no difference? And any cost estimate on this stuff? I am generally riding pretty flat, but some headwinds suck a little.
Also, I am camping up in the Eastern Sierras in June. While I'll take the fixed, I worry. Hilly in the hills, you see. I have an old Puch SS. What would it be to set it up with gears? Would it be better, cheaper to find a (cheap) geared bike?

So many questions in one post.
The cog can be changed, but if you used the 'good' loctite, it has to be heated to a temperature that will fry the grease in the bearings.
If you are paying someone else to do these things for you, it might be time to look into a proper track hub. Since you will need differing ratios between your home and the sierras, I think a new set up with a few cogs may be in order.

Thanks for the input. And you are right, it is a lot of questions. Alas, I have many. Any estimates on a 15t cog with labor?

If it's red loctite you can give de-icer a whirl. It was suggested to me at some point by a rambling and mysterious gypsy. Just the other day my buddy gave it a whirl and was able to remove a cog that he'd red loctited and ridden the entire winter. I have no idea why it worked, or whether he merely was able to muster superhuman strength via a placebo effect, but the cog came off.

The fact that I bought a one year old Tiawan framed 'mountain bike' with low end Shimano gears from a company that rents to tourists to cruise the inner harbour with ~16 days use for $200cdn should give you a price point. I have stripped the gears off and glued the seatpost in because it's intended purpose is a commuter for less than the price of a good lock.
It would have been good enough for a couple of weeks of casual trail riding as it was.
