Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Powdercoat your frame/fork for CHEAP in Boston!!!

Hey folks,

I've been searching for a cheap, but professional, powdercoater in the Boston area for my fixie frame/fork, and I finally found the place. They have a $200 minimun, BUT, the guy told me to just bring in 2 bikes and he'd do them both for $200, TOTAL! They have every color AND sandblast the factory/existing paint and pretreat the frame prior to powdercoating--all included in that price! The turnaround time is only 3-5 business days, and this place is just outside of Boston. Soooo, I'm looking for someone who wants their bike powdercoated too. $100 each, for the whole process, start to finish. This price is unheard of. I called just about every place in the phone book around here, and most quoted well over $100 for the powdercoating alone, and insisted the bike be dropped off completely clean/stripped of paint. Sandblasters quoted me anywhere from $25 to $125 to strip the frame! Don't miss this opportunity. Coat that Fixie in bulletproof powder! email me.

do I also have to wait at a public phone for a call to directions to an undisclosed location and hand off my frame and $$$ to someone in an unmarked van?

not that I came across, but I'll look into it. Is that including sandblasting? I have yet to find a single other place that conveniently sandblastis and powdercoats.

Funny that you mention this. The place you are talking about is called SD Powdercoating. I emailed Steve two days ago about getting some work done and he has yet to get back to me. In December he quoted $40 for the powdercoat and $30 for the sandblast(optional). If he is still in business I will be sending him a frame sometime next week. I will let you all know how it works out.

yes, absolutely. Those are the conditionse exactly, though rather than a pay phone, you'll find a cell phone under the bench near...

Just kidding. I really didn't mean to sound secretive. The place is Applied Plastics in Norwood.

That's even better than my $100 find (Applied Plastics, Norwood). $40 + $30 =...a damn sweet deal!

i just got an e-mail from a place off of grand ave. about 3500W or so. they said they'll powdercoat for $80, and blasting is $40. A little more expensive, but it seems to be a pretty nice shop so you don't have to worry too much about them painting your threads and whatnot. let me know if you want the info, and i'll send it your way.

I got my conversion frame and fork done for $50 about 15 minutes outside of Pittsburgh. SingleSpeeDemon's was $80 after the guy ordered the powder. Both of them looked great, too. PM me or SingleSpeeDemon if you're in the area and you want the info.

On the bostonbikers page there's a link to SD powdercoating, they seem to do a lot of bike frames, including some very cool designs.

Back to the topic. I called S+D and left a message, but haven't heard back from them.

Extreme Powdercoating in Merrimack NH has a great reputation and estimated $125-150 including stripping, decreasing and finishing.

I called Goodhues Custom Powdercoating in Derry, NH. Derry is just over the MA border off Rt 93. They said it would probably be $75-90, depending on color and condition, but would not be over $100. As they're closer than Merrimack, Attleboro, or Wareham that's where I plan to go.

Probably overkill for an old Trek 720 frame but it's a city bike and I want to see how it looks and holds up.
