chainring bolts keep loosening

I've been doing alot of trackstands lately and I've had to tighten the bolts three times in the last week. I'm wrenching down like a sissy either, but the constant little rocking motion seems to be doing it. Anyone else have this problem or any suggestions on a more perma-fix?

I found that cleaning and greasing the bolts worked really well. It seems counterintuitive, but somehow they get a better grip or something. Also, I use single stack chainring nuts but longer bolts so that even if they start to loosen, it will take a while before one actually pops out and I am more likely to notice it and fix the problem.

I think the that the cleaning/regreasing idea is a good one, it seemed to help me w/ the same problem. I also had one mechanic suggest Loctite, which I woulda used as a last resort. If THAT doesn't work you can always fall back on the Lord and the power of prayer, brother . best o luck.

my chainring bolts loosen all the time, though i don't trackstand, so that's not my problem exactly.

i think my problem stems from the incompatibility of my bmx cranks with the track chainring.. gonna throw a bmx chainring on there to see if that solves it..

I heard that sometimes your bolts can be maxing out their threads so when you think it's tight it's just reaching the end of the threading.

That's what happened to me. Get new bolts that are for sure for sure the right size. I did that and loctite and haven't had a problems since. Also, your chain ring may be worn out at the bolt hole.

Try high strength threadlocker glue from your local automotive store. It is what I have always used on the rack on the back of my bike. Commuting and carrying a load on the bike rack the vibrations would always rattle the little screws loose at the bottom of the rack. I had to buy new screws enough times until I finally figured out threadlocker glue. I did that and the damn rack hasn't come loose yet in 15 years. (I just bought a new tube for my new bike and rack). Supposedly this glue is pretty easy to pop loose if you want to do that and you can always buy a weaker strength. I think there are three strengths, high low and medium. Everything is supposed to be clean to make this glue most effective, which I only worry about moderately and just use high strength threadlocker glue instead.

Cool. Thanks for the heads up storygirl. I'll give that a shot.
