What music do you listen to?

I've seen a lot of references to punk rock on here--avatars, screen names. What type of music do you listen to? Are you on the fringe of music like you are on the fringe of cycling?

I you used to be a serious punk. Nothing but punk for me. I still listen to punk--Buzzcocks, Black Flag, Screeching Weasel, Jawbreaker, 88 Fingers Louie, NoFX. But my musical tastes have broadened. Now I listen to anything independent. I like instrumental rock, stuff on Dischord Records, Sunny Day Real Estate, Death Cab for Cutie, Braid, Planes Mistaken for Stars. The gamut.

bunches of stuff. I'll throw some names out - bad religion, 88 fingers louie, clash, thelonius monk, jaco pastorius, husker du, james brown, morcheeba, the 5 6 7 8's, dj shadow, blackalicious, aesop rock. actually, crap, i listen to a lot of music. i have about 350 cds now (lots of burnt ones - i used to have a radio show and got the hookup, plus downloaded + burnt albums) and 200ish albums on computer(s). good tunes is good tunes.

with the couple groups i have played in, we have done blues, funk, a little rock, and a bunch of improvised stuff (funky jazzy jams, not too hippieish though).

Ryan C,

Awesome. It sounds like you listen to quite a bit of different types of bands. Plenty of independent music, which I like to see. Are the 5,6,7,8's the band on Kill Bill? Or is it a different band. I knew of a crazy punk band named 5,6,7,8's ( or maybe 2,3,4's) from Louisville or North Carolina. I can't remember.

Right now I'm listening to Integrity, Charles Manson , Jim Jones , Godflesh, Muddy Waters, Flock of Seagulls, Tennesse Ernie Ford, Dolly Parton, In Cold Blood and Cro-Mags. Glad to see that there are some Husker Du fans still out there. Still listen to the old skate rock stuff now and then. Swiz , Articles of Faith, Effigies, Naked Raygun, Gang Green, Big Boys, the list could go on forever.

Yeah, the 5 6 7 8's are on Kill Bill. Some of their stuff kinda sucks, but they have this one really good album that I've been listening to. There's some cool Japanese rock out there. Indie stuff is definitely cool, I like supporting local bands too - its always really gratifying to buy a band's CD at a show (assuming I have the cash at the time).

I'm thinking a lot of the fixie riders have good taste in music, at least thus far.

It's interesting that someone mentioned Stevie Wonder, I'm listening to him right now.

Also interesting to see a Naked Raygun fan, I didn't know how well known they were outside of Chicago. Oh yeah and Muddy Waters rocks.

Naked Raygun and Pegboy are awesome. Chicago has put out some good punk. What about No Empathy? Listen to them? Did you ever listen to the Digits? Swiz were cool too.

Loved the Digits. Got to see them live a couple of times. Any Mono Men fans out there? Still can't get enough of the Cherubs. Great Austin band. Austin had the best scene for years. I haven't heard much from there in a while. Last bands from there that I liked were the Cherubs and Johnboy. Loved the Big BOys, Dicks, Really Red. I've seen way too many shows and used to have a massive record collection. Don't go to shows anymore and sold the records years ago.

Yeah, it refers to Buffalo 66. His music is cool too. I would like to see him live. Have you seen the new movie? The reviews say it is bad.

I listen to alot of hardcore... I go through different moods at different times.. Mostly rock music though.. have a few rap songs on my computer.. I like DJ Danger Mouse's "grey album." Bands I like are Converge, AFI(long time fan), The Bled, Tiger Army, The Locust, The Horror Pops, Norman Jean, Walls of Jericho, Nora, The Beatles, DJ DangerMouse, the Doors, Berlin, Echo and the bunnymen, I also listen to alot of music from plays.. like Evita.. I love Evita. Like I said, I go through different moods alot and will lean towards a particular genre or harder or softer music..

Any of you SF guys remember a band called Hemi? I know they had a couple of singles but I'm not sure if they did anything else. Think they had some guys from the Drunk Injuns in the band.

Lightning Bolt...oh man, those guys tore it up. I haven't seen that sort of intensity in a crowd in ages, they played with Double Dagger (https://www.posttypography.com).

Lately on the playlists: The Album Leaf, The Six Parts Seven, Maserati (been on an instrumental kick lately), The Velvet Teen, Helmet, Guilt, Closure (old school hardcore theme), the new Bjork (not sure if it's classic - certainly interesting), Song of Zarathrustra, Yaphet Kotto, The Twilight Singers, Battles, The Verve, Sub Society, These Arms are Snakes and some Rollins Band (older incarnation not newer incarnation).

I'm listening to the new Kraftwerk album, called Tour de France. Seemed like an appropriate thing to check out. It's quite good, if you're into the Kraftwerk sort of thing.

i liked brown bunny. everyone i know has panned it, not suprisingly. its nothing like buffalo66 in any way. BB is a much more indulgent movie on vince's part. part of the reason why buffalo66 was so great is that lance acord had done the cinematography. brown bunny is gallo all the way, cinematography and all. definitely not something i'd recommend to anyone. but i will say that it would have made a great 30 minute film, but makes a decent full length feature with its own moments of brilliance. gallo is great cuz he does whatever the f*ck he wants to do and brown bunny is all about that.

the Boredoms, the Bevis Frond, Young Marble Giants, Wire, Magazine, Television...

my even cadence biking music for the last couple weeks has been the Ghost Dog OST (not the one with all the Wu offshoots that got released in the US, but the actually stuff from the movie that I downloaded).
