to enlarge a bit:
some flipflops are fixed/fixed. some are fixed/free.
fixed sides have two sets of threads, freewheel sides only one.
you can put a freewheel on the "fixed" side, but you can't (sanely) put a track cog on the freewheel side.
(in other words, you could equip a fixed/fixed hub with fixed/free, or even free/free if you wanted)

To further expand on weed eaters comment. The inner set of threads on the fixed side is standard threading for the cog. The outer set is reverse threaded for the lockring which secures against the cog. This prevents your cog from spinning off while putting backpressure on the pedals.

The free side doesn't need two sets of threads because there is no back pressure to spin off the freewheel (thus negating the need for a lockring). You can put a track cog on a free side but there is no good way to affix a lockring so you end up doing some form of loctiting/jb weld or just hoping for the best that it doesn't spin off during backpressure.

AFAIK flip/flop hubs are always fixed/free. Obviously as stated you can get double free and double fixed. But flip flop generally refers to a hub you can "flip flop" between fixed and free.

There is really no reason to buy a flip flop hub other than availability. fixed fixed is better because when you realize you don't want to ride single speed (you will), you can put a fixed cog on the other side. They are simply more versatile than flip flop hubs, plus if you strip the threads on one side, the wheel isn't doomed to single speed duty.

This is news to me. I've always heard any hub with threads on each side called 'flip-flop', whether they're free/free, fixed/fixed, or free/fixed. Regardless of whether they freewheel or not, you're still flip-flopping between two different gears.
