Broken Cog

We've all heard the horror stories of spinning off a cog due to no lockring, but I totally broke a cog this weekend. I was at an intersection, took a pedal and a half, and the cranks broke free like I snapped the chain. I went over to the sidewalk to see what happened and discovered that my cog was gone (lock ring was still there). I picked the peices up from the street (sorry no pics). Three peices in all, kinda like it broke in thirds. I'm so happy I wasn't going down a hill when this happened. Has anyone ever heard of this happening?

This is the second time i've heard of EAI cogs spontaneously exploding.

Tell EAI, they'll send you a new one.

i was thinking about going up to a 17 tooth and was looking at EAI because i can't find any other 17tooth cogs but this is making me think twice. i have seen superbe 17tooth cogs but only on ebay so it's not like i have access to one whenever i want.

It was probably just a manufacturing defect. I wouldn't overreact. Tomity showed me a cog when I was in Tokyo that was missing a bunch of teeth thanks to a chainwhip. It wasn't an EAI cog. It was a ... I can't remember. Sorry, I'm useless.

jeezus that's ridiculous! you are definitely a monster.

p.s. about the no-lockring thing: last week i wanted to remove my 15er and could not get it to budge since it was loc-tite'd on... so i did the only sensible thing and took it out on the street with no lockring and tried to wrench it off by skidding it with no lockring. no dice. held on tight. i think i softened it up though (is that really a valid physical process?), because i found a chainwhip with a longer handle and it came off relatively easily.
