Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Propers to Philadelphia

I went down to Philadelphia this past weekend to watch the USPRO champ race. It was my first visit, and while the race was certainly exciting, the city stole the show. I was amazed and impressed with how bikeable your fine city is. I was on my steamroller, so this is somewhat fixed gear related. Walking back from a show at Khyber (I think that is the name?) on Saturday night, I passed by about a hundred fixes, all locked creatively to various poles. It was around Second and Bainbridge (another ?) I must have missed the cool fixed hangout. Maybe next time. The only driving I had to do was getting a yellow Mavic support car back to its home. I think if I had had to drive all over the city, my opinion would be much different. Thank god for bikes. oh, one last thing. Curtis and the crew at Via Bicycles are fine people and have a great thing going there. That's about all. I just wanted to say that all of you in the Philly crowd have a swell city.

PS. On my way out to the race on Sunday morning, I rode past a decent sized crew who appeared to be heading toward an alley cat. Was there something going on Sunday?
