Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Maybe Apple can successfully cripple another processor with bad software LOL

Anyway, Lance rides a fixed gear at the beginning of each season for training too.

Sorry to Hijack this thread but, any truth to the rumours that Apple will be releasing the Powerbook G5 soon?

Won't happen. Scuttlebutt has this as a large reason why Apple jumped the PPC ship: IBM can't get the power/heat down on a G5-class processor to make it suitable for portable use.

It opens an intriguing set of possibilities to be sure. I haven't figured out if this is genius or madness.

so my burning question is, are these just stock x86 systems or is this an agreement for intel to make a proprietary chipset/bios set for apple?

Intel doesn't make the BIOS and Open Firmware is a Forth-based BIOS which is famously portable, so it's quite possible that they could go with an off-the-shelf system. On the other hand, one of the things that Jobs supposedly learned at NeXT (which produced a version of NeXTstep that would run on vanilla x86 boxes) was the power of "controlling the entire widget".

I expect an x86 Mac will not be a plain ol' PC but at the same time it won't be so radically different that you won't be able to use it in some sort of cheap-o compatibility mode.

holy geekins!

We went from Track to dis to bikes to lost pictures to a FRIGGIN apple discussion. I love this place. I feel like I should cut the track discussion (no offense go4broke44) and pass the rest off to the FOO forums!

note > Anyone mentions "Tux, the linux mascot" and I trash the thread.
