Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I Guess I'm Trendy Cattle ~ Moo!

Here's a post on Chicago's Craigslist. It's kinda funny.

http://chicago.craigslist.org/bik/77871870.html

But I admit I'm trendy cattle. I have a few track bikes and yet I don't ride on the Velo or work as a messenger.

If there's any other trendy cattle out there I'd like to know. I need some friends.

Yup

I was called a Faux-messenger by my brother-in-law last night. So I hit him with my U-lock.

Not really. I just like to ride bikes. Fixed gear bikes. I don't even have a U-lock.

You know what I would say to the ass that wrote that...Who gives a ****. Sounds like some elitist BS which is funny when it's over a friggin' bike. It reminds me of roadies that ride around town w/ there $5,000 bike w/ nose turned up and petunia's in there ass while laughing at my entry level road bike. Apparently in Chicago if you ride any type of bike you will be judged as a poser.

If I learned one thing in my years it's to not to take anything too seriously.

I take money, my bills, family...the important stuff seriously.

But bikes!? Messengers?! Bullsiht pissy scene stuff!?

Jeez, it's summer. Let's have some fun!

Moooo! Halifax, NS, has a herd of maybe five. I did, however, encourage my friend Brendan to build up a fixed gear last week. I lent him a wheel. He rode his new bike for 7 minutes and broke his arm. Sweet.

When the urge to pose is overwhelming I get out the rusty mountain bike, put a plastic oscos bag on the cloud 9 seat, balance my strapless styrofoam helmet on my unkempt hair, blaze, strap on a rucksack paperboy style and hit the road like the apparent majority of non summer job messengers do around here.

Obey your thirst!

Many years ago we had an older guy who insisted on riding his fixed gear bike with no brakes on club rides. The old fart was a danger to everyone around him.
