all this talk of e-framebank and keirin frames got me wondering; how would you spec a keirin build from the ground up? it's not something i know a whole lot about, so educate me!

here's what i would do, but i would love to hear about other stuff.

(this is for a real-world build, so i'm leaving out the campy njs gruppo, as well as the shimano 10-pitch stuff)

frame: flavor of your choice, (mine is 3rensho 'cause i used to own one)
hubs: da high-flange, natch
cranks: 2nd generation da (fluted)
stem: nitto jaguar
seatpost: nitto pearl
bb: hatta? swan?
headset: hatta? swan?
bars: nitto b123 38cm (i'm a skinny guy)
pedals: no clue
straps: no clue
grips: no clue

did i forget anything? prolly.

i have and love some Soyo grips... throw some of those on.. im just assuming they are njs approved though

Don't you have to be 100% pure blooded Japanese to get the njs approval?

usually i think, but somewhere out there is a campagnolo njs group. i'v never even seen pics, but i've heard from a number of sources that it exists, and, iirc, a seatpost or something showed up on ebay a while back.

I'd love to have one of those purple Vogue frames, if I could find one in my size. Curse my gaikokujin legs!

I can't decide if I'd go with a Sugino/Suzue/Nitto setup or a D-A/Nitto setup. The D-A parts are pretty hot, but my years of "champagne appetite on a beer budget" have steered me towards Sugino.

I heard a story whereby the NJS continually rejected Campy stuff as 'too weak' to protect the Japanese purity and then one year Campy produced an FU line that they could not reject. Could be urban biker myth though.

last weekend Tomity showed me the Campy catalog that had the NJS stuff in it. I think he has the hubs. you can probably find some info at campyonly.com. If I wasn't on a dial-up I'd look myself. plus I'm lazy.

hatta and swan are the same. I think hatta is the mfg, swan is the model.

definitely Dura Ace / Nitto. the sugino 75 crank doesn't compare to the shimano. and disco hubs? c'mon. the D/A are mo’ pretty.

You've got the seatpost and the stem backwards, and the pearl's a road stem. What about the rest of the wheels? Are there NJS approved spokes and tubulars? Or is it fair game as long as there're 36 spokes to a wheel?

the only NJS rim I know of is the Araya Gold.

Swan is a Hatta model BB and headset. The headset is unsealed, so I went with D/A. I also went with 7600 D/A, not 7700. One, the ***** looks nicer, two, there are no 7700 high-flange hubs, three, a little bird told me the splined BB isn't as good as the square one.

I brought the hubs back from Japan, but John at businesscycles laced them to Arayas for me. I mounted Vredestein Tricomp fortezza tubulars yesterday. I guess if you're an NJS freak you won't like my 32 hole hubs (non-NJS) or rims, but I didn't see the need for 36. I saw lots of Keirin bikes with Arayas when I was there. I love their traditional profile and finish.

This bike has 38cm B123AA drops. I have 36cm B123s that are waiting for the Kalavinka. The wheels will also go on it, along with my Jaguar seatpost and MKS custom nuevo pedals and NJS straps.

Just wanted to comment on your skinny Bars - heh heh. I've been collecting parts for my dream bike - and being a smaller dood, I've found it kinda of tricky. But it's coming together. I was so happy to find and order Nitto B123 36cm from Business Cycles. Got this email yesterday >> "This model has just now become available in 36, but it will be about a week before I have 36's here."

Don't even think about using the Dura Ace easton tubed seatpin, I've broken two at the tube/seatpin clamp interface and have friends that have broken theirs. I still can't believe how it got NJS approval!!

How come no one has said Suntour Superbe??

If the Superbe Hubs i have were 36 as opposed to 32, and I had Araya rims, i'd have a full NJS Suntour Superbe Pro/Nitto group I beleive.
