Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

hey noobie here...

I'm in the process of doing my first fixed gear conversion and have run into a snag with my crank. I bought a used 171 cm sugino mighty competition crank and after going trhough all of the work cleaning it up i discovered that the whole to bolt on the bottom bracket is to narrow. owuld i be able to find bottom bracket with a slightly narrower bolt or would it be possible to replace the bolt on a bottom bracket?

thanks in advance for any input

WOW! that's a big crank!

really, I have no idea what you're talking about. the hole on the crank should be square. it should slide over the bb spindle leaving a little space (bb shouldn't be sticking out from the crank) so when you put on the bolt or nut it should squeeze the crank to the BB to secure it all together.

pics maybe?

yeah, the hole is square, but the bb spindle will only slide in about a 1/4 to 1/3 of the way. i'm working on my bike at a comunity bike shop where they have used parts and someone on duty to help with an questions. being that this is my first experience putting a bike together i thought i was just being an idiot, but the guy working at the show said that the crank holes taper was too narrow. he also said he's never sen that before. i imagine that i should just be taking it back where is got it and try to swap it for a new set.

I say replace the BB, not the crank. a shimano UN-73 is $15 or so. I have no idea which one you'll need. most like 68mm wide, probably english threaded, width = I dunno. what frame is it going in?
