single speed mt bike

I am thinking about selling mt specialized stumpjumper fsr xc and getting a single speed mt bike. I have no experience with a single speed but would like to get into it. Most of the terrain is flat where i ride but very technical with rocks and roots where i ride in maine. I am looking at the Bianchi SASS cromoly frame and fork. Let me know what you think. How many of you do some serious technical mt biking on a single speed.
Thanks
Chris

technical is fine on a SS, it's the steep hills that are hard. Before you do it you can always set your bike up to NOT shift and go for a ride and see how it goes. This would also help you gauge your gear selection on the SS bike. Stick it in the 32 ring and the 15, 16 or 17 in back and go for it. SS is definitely fun !

i'm in the process of building a rigid Specialized Hardrock SS. more of a frankenbike than anything. i'll let you know how it turns out

I do and many people around here do. It's my favorite kind of riding. If you've got the skills the single speed won't hold you back. Remember, it's the rider not the bike.

Bring on the rocks!
