shoes
I'm looking for a good pair of shoes/sneakers/what have you to wear casually but also use for riding. i was wondering if you guys had any suggestions, right now i wear converse and nike dunk's, which are certainly not cutting it.
i was thinking something like puma speedcats http://www.zappos.com/images/053/714...85-88853-p.jpg thanks |
Those Pumas certainly look cool, but I have my doubts as to their usefulness as a cycling shoe. Looks like a pretty flimsy sole. (Completely random aside: "Fillet of sole baby, it's my favorite dish. Fillet of sole baby, when the dish is fish...")
I wear 661 Launch shoes. http://www.sixsixone.com/gear/shoe_launch.html I love my clipless pedals, and I'm not willing to revert to toe-clips just 'cause I wanna wear fashionable shoes. These are functional on the bike and casual looking enough to pass as "normal" shoes. Lake also makes some casual-looking cycling shoes (http://www.lakecycling.com/trail.html). Even if you don't run clipless, the stiffer sole on a cycling-specific shoe will allow for much more comfortable and efficient pedaling... -Trevor |
i wear Van Vegan Old Schools and they work nicely... pretty firm sole.

re casual cycling shoes, others on this board have recommended the Adidas Minnret. I like my Pearl Izumi Groove shoes. Mine are black and yellow, though the newer models look more like hiking shoes due to the earthtone colour scheme.
I think companies like Puma should make cool-looking SPD compatible shoes. At least one model. I mean come on. John Fluevog made a big clunky leather shoe with SPD holes a few years ago. Way cool. They don't anymore. But they should. edit: trevor, those 661 shoes are nice! |

i got those cause my frame's black with white decals.. |
the old school vans work really well because they are stiff. plus they don't set you back 80 bucks.

Hipoppotamus Bowling i just got these last week, stiff sole, leather, slides into clips really nicely. unfortunately i can't kick up the petal quite as easy as with my old addias sambas. but all and all much better for cycling. i recremend them highly |
I think there was a thread on this not too long ago... and yes, there was. A lot of people like Adidas Sambas. I like Converse Jack Purcells.
Does anyone know if Adidas is still making the Eddy Merckx reissues? Those were cool looking shoes. Hey, evanyc: is 99x still the only place that has those vegan old skools? m. |

I just got these pumas this week. They are dreamy for riding so far. "This low profile narrow silhouette is inspired from a vintage 1970's PUMA cycling shoe." They are slender - but they fit my feet fine. |

I was also considering the Puma Bolts - but couldn't find the them in my size or this color. "cycling inspired" Anyways - just as long as your shoes match your color scheme. Heh heh! |
Everyone should just wear SIDI Dominators all the time.
Period. |

I like 'em a lot, but I'm not sure I'd have been willing to pay the retail price.. Prior to that I had some Lake Vans knock-offs that were gettin' old and faded. -Trevor |
Skateboard shoes work for me, I have some "etnies" (sp?) ones, you can get many different varients of the same basic thing at your local skate shop.
|
I have those speedcats and they have zero cushioning in the sole. My feet hurt like a bastard after wearing them for a day. I really like my adidas rio grande. They are comfy and have a great sole for flipping my pedal.
http://www.1but.pl/items/item_555_0.jpg bonus:I noticed Team T-mobile was wearing them in their Tour press photo. |

Where did you find those? Are they all synthetic? |
www.zappos.com , they're called "limber up moscow"s
suede around the laces and heel though =/ but its only a little bit! |
i have been riding with converse lo-tops for a while now, and they are flat (though not so rigid) and a little cushy. good for riding and some walking. PLUS, you can now make your own color scheme - www.converse.com - for $60
so once i finish putting my new bike together, i'll order a pair of purcell's to match! |
I think that other thread was similar to this but that dude was asking about streetish shoes for a bike tour from Sf - Van(!).
If I had my druthers I would have gone with some sidi or othersuch mtb show for mess work. But I spent the money on race shoes with spd-r. (when i probably should have gone clips and straps for velo work. anyway) I rock adidas shell-toes, sambas, or onitzuka tigers for mess work. I also swap pedals to shimano m-524s (i think) they have a platform with teeth on one side and spd on the other. |
