Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

was delighted to see this in my mailbox today.. it's rather small but it's a msgr on a geared bike w/ thick chain 'round waist and package in the bag (let's also note the helmet, lights and whistle) facing down an entire peloton:

edit, here's a larger version:

also, a friend who works in PR tells me there's a fashion spread in the latest i-D magazine that's msgr "inspired"...

Was the illustration for any particular article inside? I wonder what the concept for the cover was supposed to be this week.

I'm thinking the concept was...most hated people? Something along those lines.

concept is: It's Tour de France time. The bicycles approaching the viewer are racing the TdF. Meanwhile, hard at work, a NYC messenger pedals forth, fighting traffic as usual, to get the job done.

Looks like a Bruce McCall, yes? He likes to do universal-image-tweaked-by-NYC covers. Like the one with the real estate agent showing a cardboard box to a homeless man. Etc. Nice colors on this one, unusual subtlety for him.

I hate how long I have to wait for my New Yorker.

i squinted and could almost read his signature--I looked at the site for a better image but didn't find one.

i'm a lifelong NYer subscriber, and my grandma before me, since it first was published. i've been trying to understand New Yorker humor much longer than I've actually been able to understand it. not sure if that is a good thing or not.

anyway. thanks!

Try the source itself:
The New Yorker Store

But note that for this week it says "this weeks cover may be available as a print as well"

Yeah, if enough people request it I'm sure that it will go into archive for later requests.

Great illustration. I'd love it as a poster

I looked at the cover in person today and noticed that he doesn't have brakes on the bike. Geared brakeless, he's hardcore.

So that's the TdF... and he's a NY bike messenger.

Is it just me, or isn't that a long way to send something by bike?
