Gearing question

So im deciding on my rear cog size for my fixed gear project, and i have a question:

How will i know if a certain cog/chainring tooth combination will provide only one skid point? i dont want to wear my tires too quick.

The front chainring is 44 tooth. I was thinking either a 17 or 18 tooth rear cog.

Rudimentary math should tell you there will no no problem, since your ring isn't evenly dividable by either cog.

Hi, my name in Al and I haven't skidded in 6 weeks.

If you don't want to wear your tires, then use a front brake and minimize skidding. After going thru two rear tires I found it much cheaper to replace $5 front brake pads every 1000 miles instead of a $20-30 tire every 300.

(I too obsessed with skid patches at first, hence the chart I made that is probably in the links provided above. If you have more than one patch and can skid ambidexterously and sometimes rotate your cog on the chain you shouldn't need to worry too much, just check the wear once in a while to see if its even.)

The man speaks truth. Hell, with an actual front brake, you can even make those panic stops if your fixie ESP fails.

Not to mention if your road conversion has a screwed up weight distribution and even the slightest forward weight shift down a hill unloads the rear tire.

what i like about fixies is that it is like learning to ride all over again. do it slowly and enjoy. pls put a brake on in the beginning. and when you dont use it anymore- take it off..

oh and i ride 39*18 , 42*16 , 47*18 , 52*16. depending on bike, level of alc in blood and direction.

ive been riding 52-16 for the past two weeks and i can't wait until my new cranks come witha 46t chainring

My fixer has a 43x18. Its about the same as riding the 39x15 gear on my road bike.
