~ I Almost Hit A Fixie Rider ~ Lordy, I'm Oh So Sorry!
Yeah so last night I rented a van to move some goods to my storage space (yeah, dead bodies. how'd ya guess?). I'm driving down Armitage Ave and I'm pulling over to the curb. I was stopped at the sign, then decided to pull over for Italian Ice. So I wasn't flying down the street but this guy on his converted Trek sure was. He blew the stop sign & I almost hit the guy!
I'm a great driver. But driving a van / SUV has it's drawbacks. Those signs on big trucks that say "I can't see youif you can see my mirrors" are so true. Plus you're up higher so it's tough to see below.
Regardless, be safe out there. I'm a very careful driver, I make all stops and signal everywhere. Folks like me are 1% of the drivers out there. Yakin' on their phones, eatin', ect & never signaling. I've commuted for the last 7 years. I've had some close calls but have never been hit or fallen off my bike.
And I'm sorry that I almost killed you, Mr. Converted Trek. I just didn't see you.
I deserved your verbal lashing. But it's a two way street out there. And that was a stop sign you blew.
I'm just glad I didn't have to haul to the hospital. Stroger is a long drive and besides you would of found the bodies of the hooors is my van.

The guy blew through a stop sign and he passed you on your right? Is that correct? If so, you have nothing to apologize for.

I'm a big proponent of the anti-conversion lobby. It's gotten out of hand, don'tcha think?
And he was headed through the stop sign when I turned. If he was slowing down to observe the sign it wouldn't of been a problem.

If you were using your turn signals you have nothing to apologize for. As a cyclist you have to pay attention to cars and the signals they put off, if you signalled and he ignored it then he is the dumbass.
The many, many times that I've nearly been cut-off and the once that I actually have been cut-off (over the bars, scraped and bruised) were all by people who "just decided" to turn without putting on their signals. There's a use/reason for that little thing sticking out the side of your steering wheel column people, use it.
Edit: Yeah, that cat attacking the baby is awesome!

When I was driving around there was another car on the passenger side. Unless my passenger told me there was a car there I wouldn't of known. Can you say blind spots?!

RG, it's called "Italian Ice Eyes". You pass a stand on a hot day, it's like tunnel vision.

I almost pasted a dude in Richfield - Sorry Mr. Yellow.
Stop, look left, right, left again, and proceed - oh crap, blind spot biker....
I always make eye contact with drivers - if that fails, I proceed with caution.

I almost hit some kid on a brakeless pista a month or so ago. He was wobbling the wrong way down a narrow one-way street, and it was pretty obvious he had no idea how to stop his beast or hop a curb with it.
Much as I love darwin, I didn't want to be the one to hit this poor dummy.

here's some classic **** -- this happened a couple of weeks ago. i was in my car helping my girlfriend move to her new apartment (her bike was in the back of my car at this particular moment) and pulled up to the red light at this intersection. i was the first car "in line." the light turned green and i hit my gas pedal to, well, get my ass across the intersection and on my way. sure enough, the next thing i know, i hear this "THWAMP" (think a really loud metallic sounding thud) and see this red cruiser bike go down. the person had run the light and lost. i figured that i had maimed some girl, but then i see the telltale green hat of my friend come up from the wreckage. he usually rides fixed, but has been rocking a cruiser lately due to that bike being out of commission. naturally, i roll down my window and yell "YO RANDY, I HIT YOU!! WHAT'S UP?" and pull across the street and stop. first thing he says is, "YO AARON, YOU HIT ME!!" and i get out of the car and we shake hands and start jabbering and **** while we twist his handlebars and saddle back into position. these three girls and a couple of cars who saw the encounter looked extremely confused that we seemed so happy and that we obviously knew each other. it was pretty hilarious. he was alright aside from some scrapes and such, so all was well. all said and done it was a totally bizarre and surreal situation.

I was driving home from dinner last night andI have cross the LA river on Spring st. it is a very narrow bridge and it is dark. At the crest of the bridge there is a guy on his cruiser with no lights coming right at me. Luckily I was able to move out the way in time.

I wonder how many cyclists (% of drivers) hit cyclists as they are cycling.

I got doored by a cyclist once, I landed well and he was in almost as shaken as me. Made the whole experience way nicer, no blame, a clear accident. In contrast the minivan with full family that crushed me into another car because they saw a good parking space were awful to deal with, Not only did they try and run away and get stopped by bystanders, but they then immediately went into massive denial mode, yelling, waving asthma inhalers for effect. Instead of asking how I was they told me I was ok, net effect was me contemplating suing/pressing charges, something that never would have crossed my mind had they actually shown some concern.

I had a head on with a biker on a bike path. 4th of july after the fireworks. Saw him at the last second and tried to dive right. It is really funny, only b/c I didn't get hurt. Pretty sure my shoulder hit him right in the melon, and he had a good concussion, or he had eaten a bunch of acid. or some of both. This was before everyone had a cell phone and we had to wait for someone to get help. he must have asked "what happened?" 100 times. maybe more.
I had to get him to the hospital in those circumstances. I was kind of scared.
The funny thing is that I moved away a couple years, adn now that I am back, his front teeth are gone. We are two of the biggest guys in a small town, 6'8" and 6'6" so we knew each other before this mishap. I met his roommate and told him the story, and he said you're the one who knocked out his teeth!
no lights, no helmets, of course.

shants, your story sounds a lot like the time i got doored and went flying over the handlebars, rolled across the shoulder, and got up ready to kick some ass only to find out that the dickhead who had doored me was my roommate.

Jees I can't believe these stories because the same thing happened to me last week. I was in a head on collision with a biker passing a jogger in a blind spot. She should have never been there but so it goes. Over the handle bars. Before I could really lay into the girl I was like, oh I know you. The jogger was stunned as we got off the ground all bloody and hugged each other Funny thing is I think it's better that way, I mean it sucks and I am pissed about it and still taking pain meds but at least she got me a ride home and is overwhelmingly apologetic and willing to pay for the damages in full.

once i almost got runned over and looked at the tinted windows of the car that did it and saw my own face staring back at me and thought oh my gosh my doppelganger just almost ****ing runned me over! then i realized i was drunk and giddy.
