Hi all

I am looking for a good pair of shoes to use with toeclips.

Ideally it should be: stiff, rubber sole (not coarse), black not flashy, so i can go walk in office without strange looks.

please post you suggestions, with reasoning behind your choice, pics & links if available.

Thanks a lot!

Trike

Not stiff like shoes for clipless, but stiff enough. They are indoor soccer shoes, and can take quite a beating. I'm still looking for something comparable that breathes better though. They're kinda hot on training rides in the summer.

i've never noticed them getting hot, i wear them all the time,

they are my primary shoes, and they work great form every thing,

fit perfectly in the clips, and are great to walk around in.

blackspot is just as much an advertisement for commodified counterculture as chuck taylors are for nike.

the preferred chuck knock-off is

https://www.nosweatapparel.com

other than that, there's newbalance and redwing. they have high AFLCIO ratings for employee treatment/working conditions. only the slimmer models fit in toe clips well, but you can always get a clip one size bigger than you otherwise need.

best option of all, used. get thrift store sneakers. i've gotten brand new adidas from thrift stores for next to nothing. bypass the sweatshop issue altogether.

don't forget to black out, burn off, or tear up the logos if you get secondhand shoes.

They are leather with no mesh venting. On long rides on hot days, they get hot on *my* feet. I still heartily recommend them.

I second the Asics Tigers.
Flat and narrow. Great contact with pedal.

Between the bag, tube protector, shoe, stretching, poseur, and other odd threads. I have the strange urge to start the "Fixie Riders: Boxers or Briefs?" thread. Maybe with a nifty poll. . .people like polls. But alas I will not do such a thing.

For clip pedals I always liked any kind of old school court shoes. Since their soles are stiffer than soccer or running shoes yet smooth.

I have maintained since their introduction that the No Sweats look more like Sonics, Sparx or Lynx than Chucks.

Just for the sake of elaborating the idea, and because I can be annoying about things like this: exactly how is it bypassing the issue if you've bought used sweatshop shoes v. new ones? They were still originally made in a sweatshop and I've still paid money for 'em.

Is it simply because you're not directly encouraging the big sneaker companies to use sweatshop labor? Or is it because by buying them used at huge discounts, you're trying to encourage a devaluation of their products?

Explicate, please, ink.

BTW, Asics Tigers are quite nicey.

Not to be completely nitpicky but Onitsuka Tigers by Asics are a general name. There are specific styles to Onitsuka Tiger by Asics sneakers such as the Ultimate 81, Mexico 66 and Top Seven. Please help peeps buy the right shoe.

i usually run a pair of merrells with a nice stiff thin sole. i never wore them before the soles started falling off of my sambas, but now i won't wear anything else.
