Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? smokin roadies

so, gave the new bike a test ride today around hilly suburban nj, and was worried about the hills at first, but then it was just like walking - so lovely - and every time i caught a roadie on a hill i just smoked them, so much fun. im really begining to love to this fixed gear.

fun, isn't it?

there really isn't anything better than straddling your $200 partsbin special and blasting by a dude in a unitard on a $2500 bike.

Most roadies aren't much of a threat, but on the occasions when I have come across riders that actually race, I've gotten schooled pretty bad. Note to self: there's a pretty big spectrum of road bike riders out there. There's the guy on the cervelo with a disc and a tri-spoke that I went by like he was standing still, and then there's the guy on the unmemorable bike whose wheel I rode at 27mph for a bit before he pulled away from me.

Totally.

I mean, I get off on passing people too, but you gotta realize that a lot of those guys in spandex on $4k road bikes are damned strong riders, and the only reason you're passing them is that while you're out for a 10 mile jaunt, they're doing 50-100 that day.

We have a huge range of roadies here in Bend, from Olympians to people with just too much money.
I never know what to expect.
As a general rule, if I catch them at the bottom of a hill I can give them a good contest.
However, the really fast ones...well, I don't even belong on the same road with them.
It has nothing to do with the type of bike they ride.

moreover, many riders have rigid training schedules that involve both low intensity training and recovery rides.

Congrats,
I wonder if it is your drivetrain or your skill - if the former, my question is why these stupid a$4@6les do not ride fixed on Tour etc. if the latter I do not know why you do not go to France to smoke Lance and Co. Edit: Forget Lance, smoke the last one to finish any mountain stage.

Yeah you're nothing until you can beat the absolute best and strongest cyclists in the entire world on your fixed gear.

Sure, it is easier to bragg on the 'net about beating random riders you do not know anything about.

I wasn't trying to rain on your parade or anything. Just, you know, a lot of people get really obnoxious about how they rock so much harder than all the "dweebs in spandex on $4,000 bikes" (to paraphrase).

That, and some of us actually are those dweebs in spandex some days of the week.

Every time I smoke a roadie I have to lower my saddle a little because my balls swell with manliness. Also, the hair on my palms gets thicker.....?

In other words, I really have nothing to contribute to this thread. I like bikes.

...makes more room? I really don't know - it just seemed the appropriate action that one would take.

You really want to show some balls? Try actually racing. Doesn't matter: road race, crit, or the drome... but skip a time trial. Save the cheat beating for an actual race. Blowing through five red lights to catch a roadie doesn't mean much of anything...

It's not what you ride, it's how you ride it. I've passed a viper in my mom's neon on the highway, but that really doesn't mean anything.

But I love the way you can tackle a hill on a fix. I would absolutly toast my roomate up hills before he went fixed. Then again, he could lose me on the downs if there was an intersection at the bottom.

Yea, but catching and dropping roadies on a fully loaded, fixed gear bicycle up a long hill, and staying ahead on the downhill means something. Until they shift gears and drop you.
