premonitions

I was planning on heading out for a nice long ride today -- either Jersey Shore, Nyack, or a Staten Island loop -- but felt wrong for some reason. I don't normally get punctures, but I was really, really worried about being trapped on Staten or something with a flat, and I just had ordered resupplies (tubes/patches/etc) from Nashbar but had not yet received them.

So I decided to ride a few CP laps on the fix for both exercise and to see if i'm too slow to show up for the Monday CP races (answer: yes).

First lap went fine... second lap went fine... cruising around the corner near the bottom of the park at Columbus Circle... PSSSHHHHHHHHHHH.

Roll to a quick halt and see a HUGE (1/2" or so) gash through the tread on my front tubular (a POS Criterium tire made in Thailand. Blech.) Ended up having to walk over to 59th/5th to catch the train home...

Lesson, as always: bring the patches/spares, and friends don't let friends ride crap tires.

If you had taken your original route would you have flatted?

of course, crappy tire = flat , where ever you go. This isn't really a premonition but just common sense to not take a long ride with crappy tires in messed up urban streets without backup.
