riding with broken big toe
 

anyone of you ever done this? my accident prone self managed to put my foot under a lawn mower this afternoon, miraculously i still have all my toes. although one good chuck taylor shoe and sock look like they've been in a meat grinder. just curious if anyone has done this, its more out of neccesity rather than stubborness. i don't own a car or have a driver's license, so i have to ride the bike(s).

Sounds painful. I rode with a broken little toe for a mile to and from school when I was twelve, it hurt a lot if I tried to ride normally, so I had to ride with basically one foot.

I've been riding with a broken rib since I got hit by a car a month ago...

It seems like it would be easiest clipless since the rigid sole and ability have alot of float would let you work around it. good luck!

I rode to the hospital with (what I thought to be) a broken foot. I don't think I could've done it with a freewheel, but on my fixie, I just let the ol' gimpy foot go for a ride and did all the pushing with the good one. Use your judgement.

i broke the long bone down the side of my foot, and though i could barely walk i could ride. because i didn't have to rotate the foot along its length when riding i didn't put the same pressure on the painful area and kind of used the better foot to do most of the pushing and the bust one to pull. i recommend firmly taping the toe to it's neighbor and wearing more rigid sneakers if you have them. i used an old pair of converse one-stars and they were great. got me to work and back when i could barely walk and needed a stick when i did. that got old real quick. my girl got mad at me at first for thinking i could ride but she saw the sense of it in the end

i broke the last three toes plus some of the bones on top of the foot near them. i rode on that for a few months and tried straightening the jumbles out myself every few nights. it was painful, but that's what medicine is for. taping the toes will save lots of the pain, tape tightly and wrap generously. if you can be a little "lighter" on the bike that helps too. it's weird though, walking was impossible but cycling was okay. well, climbing hills was a challenge.

I rode once with a split toe. Kicked my Soloflex and split my little toe open. Rode about 5 miles each way to a clinic to get it looked at. I use platforms on all my bikes,so it really wasn't too bad.

On the subject:my Dad went fishing one time and broke his right ankle when he stepped on a pebble coming out of his truck. Didn't realise it was broken,so he took the boat off the trailer,went fishing,then put the boat back on and went home. By the time he got home it started to bother him,but he still put the boat/trailer in the yard(pushed it himself) and then cleaned the boat. He finally wound up riding his old 70's vintage Honda 750 to the hospital to get it looked at. They x-rayed it and found out it was broken and put on a cast. So he limps out to the bike with a set of crutches,straps them across the backrest,and rides home! :eek:

i didn't go to the hospital because there isn't much you can do with a broken toe. basically, they'll just wrap it up (which i did) and give you some tylenol or some other painkiller, and not having health insurance i'd rather do the diy fix than pay 400.00 for someone to do what i can do myself. i actually rode on it today, and it felt better riding on it than walking on it, once i started pedaling it was fine for the most part.
