Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? we always sit in the bike shop on slow days and try to guess what the next bike trend will be. we've narrowed it down to:
ninja bikes (ss flat bar 700c dual-brakes)
beach cruisers
3 speed mixtes

the problem is that you *know* it has to be something relatively cheap, so it has that bohemian hipster cred. and it has to be not universally accessible.

I dunno about over there but in Brooklyn the 3 raleigh, schwinn, ross speeder/cruisers are everywhere. They are relatively cheap -most find em in garage sales for around a $100. Hip or not is debatable... they are vintage [buzzword] but then again they are pretty durable bikes... and less in line on the food chain of bike theft.

Beach cruiser and 3 speed mixtes are as rampant here as fixies are. In Wicker Park it goes, one fixie, one cruiser/3-speed, one road/mountain. Many of the ladies I know who don't ride fixed all ride cruisers or three speeds. They're plentiful and cheap here.

Like any other trend, it will continue to grow untill its popularity drives out the subculture that started it, leaving only the trendy followers who will soon abandon it when the next trendy thing comes along.
you think someone who likes riding fixed and has been riding fixed for a long time is going to stop because there's suddenly a huge interest in it??? is that what you did? are planning on doing? that's sad... but i really doubt that's what any true fixed fan would do... riding fixed is fun no matter how many are doing it. you can always make yourself feel elite by going faster or doing more backwards circles

OMG..worst hijack ever. ( insert comicbook store guy voice)

Yeah, Sac is getting crazy these days. You can't throw a stick without hitting a fixie lately. Yet oddly there seem to be a complete lack of community like in other cities.

On that note. Scott are you down for a ride tomorrow night? I might be getting together with a couple of guys on this board for a ride and beers.

that sounds exactly like Providence, RI. I was eating outside at sidewalf cafe last night and I just sat there and watched 3 speed, fixed, S/S, over and over and over must have been what seemed like 50 riders in and hour.

there are two fat old guys on pistas in my neighborhood.
i wonder if they know eachother.
when a fat old guy has a pista (and switches the bars for bullhorns), that means it's all over.

My upstairs neighbor (who I might be tempted to label with the 'H' word if I hadn't come to so detest it...besides, he's sort of a trustifarian loser and maybe not even up to snuff with the cool kids) rides an old 10 speed Nishiki mixte. He finally got it after 1. his original "ninja bike" got boosted when he left it unlocked in front of a bar one really drunk evening and 2. he lost...multiple times...the trashy yellow Raleigh Record I gave him.

He stole a tire from one of my wheels in the basement, but I don't really mind. It's a 27". I think recently he got a new rear wheel. The previous one was kind of F'd up because he kept riding it for a long time with no air after getting a pinch flat. This is sort of funny given that he can't shift anyhow because he broke the shifter mount on the stem and now has them tied around the conveniently located double seat tube. I think one of his brake cables (or is it both) is also tied up in there. He fred flinstones everywhere he goes.

Anyhow, all this goes to say: yeah, mixte's are on the upswing.

I'm a little unclear on the term mixte? Please define.

From Sheldon Brown's site:
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_m.html

Mixte
A style of lady's frame in which the "top tube" consists of a pair of small diameter tubes running more-or-less straight from the upper head lug, past the seat tube, and on to the rear fork ends. A mixte frame thus has 3 sets of rear stays, instead of the usual two. A variant on the mixte uses a single, full sized top tube running from the upper head tube to the seat tube, but retains the middle set of stays. A lady's type bike that lacks the middle pair of stays is not a mixte.

DESCRIPTION

Mixte frames are stronger than conventional lady's frames, particularly in resisting the tendency of the seat tube to get pushed backward in the middle when ridden by a heavy rider

In French, "mixte" would be pronounced "MEExt", but normal U.S. bicycle industry pronunciation is "MIX-ty"

But what the heck is ska? ;-)

You ever seen those monkeys on the street in the suits dancing for change? The music that the organ grinder with them is making is kinda like ska, but less marketable.
