Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

fixed crank vs. ss crank

so a question for those of you who ride both ss and fixed gear. what crank arm lengths do you use? do you have longer on one as opposed to the other, any reasons?

My fixed has 170, and I'm currently building a singlespeed, debating on arm length.

go at it kids!

stay with the same arms. maybe later you can get 165 for the fixed(track) bike later. 170 for SS..

Fixed on the road I run 170. Off-road, I switch between fixed and SS and use 175. Some people like to run longer cranks on the trail, 180 or better, but there's lots of rocks where I ride and even freewheeling I clip them sometimes. I rather have the clearance than a tiny bit more leverage.

I'm still waiting on the 171.25's. 170's work well, but I just need a little more.
