While I'm sure most of you have real jobs during the day/night, as opposed to my loser grad student self, I'm going on my weekly "long" ride with my friends today and wanted to see if anyone else with 3+ hours to burn wanted to rep fixies with me. Today we're going to be doing about 50 miles - up to Bedford and then a big loop through Carlisle and Concord before heading back to Bedford and down to Cambridge. We're not going uberfast or anything, probably about 15-16 mph average, and the weather looks to be great for this kind of ride. If you want to come along, we're meeting at Porter Square at 4:15 pm. I'll be the ****** on the white IRO.
Read that as: Definitely come along - the more bikes, the better. My labmates/friends are all roadies (one was the captain of the MIT cycling team, even), but they're all laid back dudes and pretty cool (at least for physicists/nuclear engineers). And best of all, they respect the fixie. Respeck.
Yeah, we'll just be waiting in that little triangle part where the T stop entrace is along Mass Ave. One or two people will be coming up from MIT, and two of us will be waiting there already. I'll be the white Jamie Roy with the super-cool red and black helmet.
Which reminds me, I need to go to the hardware store there and try to get a 5 mm T-handle allen wrench...damn seat keeps coming loose.
Oh, I have a 5mm allen wrench, just not one with a T handle. I can't get enough torque with the short end to tighten it all the way (long way won't fit)..either that or the seat rails are just getting a bit worn. Thanks for the offer though!
Edit: Yeah so the seatpost I'm using (nifty carbon piece off my Giant) actually has two bolts instead of the usual one to help change the pitch angle of the seat. Turns out I could use the long arm of the wrench on the second bolt and that seems to have winched it down nicely. I hope.
Well the ride went well, up until jrowe and my friend Eric disappeared when they didn't take a turn that the other two of us did. Hopefully they made it back to civilization alright. More Boston fixie people should come next time!
jrowe - where'd you go man? We waited a couple of minutes, and when you didn't come back, we went down the road looking for you, but never caught up, I guess.

Dude, I was just following Eric. We went back several miles. The old guy told us you went right, and you had to have turned right on Maple St. So we went down Maple St, and then a bunch of other really charming back roads until we wound up the the North Billerica rail station. After we convinced the station manager and his fat kid that we really had ridden our bikes all the way from Boston we decided to turn back. We kinda winged it. I just got back to my office in E Cambridge about 15 minutes ago. So it was more like a 60 mile ride than a 30 mile ride. Good fun though. Let's do it again.
Yeah, we totally overshot the intended route by staying on 225 looking for you guys. We ended up somewhere in (North?) Acton, but we made it back to 2A, and from then on it was familiar turf. I'd estimate we ended up pulling about 50 miles (Jason did some more hills on his own in Arlington...I was kicked).
My guess is that while we were waiting down on Maple St., you guys were backtracking on 225, and when we left to go find you further down 225, you were probably heading back toward us and then down Maple St. Had we waited a few more minutes, you probably would've found us. Anywho, glad to hear you two made it back alive. We'll be out there next Thursday for sure.
