MS150, 160 miles, fixed
 

Well guys, I just got back from the Ohio MS150 from Berea to Sandusky. My freinds that rode it thought I was crazy and even offered a spare geared bike. I told them I would be fine and I was. Its northern Ohio so its pretty flat but windy at times. I did the optional century loop the first day but it turned out to be 10-15 miles short. It could have been a calculation error or just the fact that we cut corners and that cut down our mileage (I don't have a computer so that mile figure is from a friend). Anyway, I was able to keep up for the most part and whooped up on many gearies, though they might have not been going as hard as they can. Our average was 19 but we know its a lot higher since our average got killed by slowing down and stopping at rest stops and stop signs. We estimate around 22-24 average.

I got comments from everyone about my bike and how I was doing. Honestly, if I ride it again on a fix, I would gear a little bit higher since I was spinning out sometimes and could keep up in the paceline because of that.

Just single speeded (read: coasted parts like a pu$$y) a century a couple weeks ago, makes you feel pretty good! I wondered what it would be like fixed, but I know: extremely difficult.

i need to start finding out about these longer rides in ohio... i totally would have done that, but, alas, i had no idea that it was happening.

The Hancock Horizontal Hundred is coming up - Sunday, Sept. 11 at Findlay, Ohio. I did it on a ss last year. FLAT FLAT FLAT!! Well organized ride, but not much to see unless you're in to corn & soybeans.

nice job, nitro. now that you've done this, you gotta do 200 fixed next year! i recently did this in michigan in a 48:16 gear and had a wonderful time. and easy way to determine your average speed is to note what time you start, and then just keep track of how long you stop and the rest stops - you just have to remember two numbers. anyway good on you and and keep up the long rides! i bet athens has some great hilly rides in the area.

A bit of Googling points me here for more info on the Hancock Horizontal Hundred. Sounds pretty cool, "one of the flattest rides in Ohio." And hey, what Ohioan doesn't love corn & soybeans?

My friends and I are thinking of doing the MS150 somewhere in Pennsylvania since its supposedly hilly (on my geary though). We only had a century loop on the first day and not the second. it sucked a little because the century loop didn't add up to 100 miles. The loop was 25 miles, but not an extra 25 miles. It only added 12 some miles.

It also rained cats and dogs halfway through the first day with lightning striking close by. The rain was refreshing (but got my bike really dirty) and it was a major storm because on the way back, there was a downed tree that was already cut up (big 4-5ft diameter trunk) and a telephone pole broken in the middle in someone's lawn.

Athens does have some great hilly rides. Except for the mountainous areas of the world, Athens is pretty high up there with hills. They are mostly short and really steep.

I did the MS150 on my Fixie last year... this year I have a TEAM of fixie riders...

I am also riding from Philly to Boston on my fixie in a few weeks... but that will be another thread I am sure.
