Hi,
Iīd like to change my kidīs Haro Backtrail Z12 rear cog and install a 22t one instead of the original 16t. Itīs difficult to find it. It mounts a rear coaster brake hub. Any help?
Thanks.

Would a SS freewheel work? Never thought of what to use before...

I would think that changing the front chainring would be easier.

Sounds like you have an ordinary coaster brake hub, no?
Take the wheel off, take a small screwdriver and put it inside of that ring with a break in it, in one of the three slots (you'll see when you do it). Pop that ring off. Pull the sprocket straight off. Install a new one by doing the reverse. Getting the ring back on can be tricky, but use the same small screwdriver and torque it just right, and it will go right back on.
It's a no-brainer once you do it.

I think he wants to know where he can buy the larger cog, and no, a BMX freewheel won't work. I don't know where you'll find one. Maybe someone else does.

The great Sheldon explains how Shimano bmx freewheel cogs can fit on Sturmey Archer hubs with a little filing. Maybe if you popped the cog off as explained by ryan c above and took it to a store that spcialises in bmx, you might get lucky.

We've got 'em up to 24 teeth. Same as Sturmey-Archer hubs use.

Well cristobal41, you have your answer. There is only one man who would know that the Haro Backtrail Z12 uses Sturmey archer cog size.

Hi, El:
THanks for your answer. I do not understand what you mean. Please, explain me your suggestion. Nice place Santa Cruz.

Sheldon Brown 08-26-05 07:55 AM

Sorry if I wasn't clear. We sell sprockets that will fit on your bike for $14.95, in a range of different sizes.

They're listed near the bottom of the page i sent you to. The same sprockets fit your bike as are used on Sturmey-Archer and other internal gear hubs.

No, I was wrong. I thought that a single speed BMX freewheel is basically what was used on coster brakes, but I was waaaaaay wrong. Mr. Sheldon Brown must be correct, because he is Sheldon Brown. And yes, I love Santa Cruz.
