2006 Handmade bicycle show

Wow, just saw the latest press release for the 2006 handmade bicycle show. Looks like there'll be a lot of big names there. I know it's a long way off, but us bay area people should plan a ride down there to check it out.

The 2nd annual North American Handmade Bicycle Show, which is scheduled for March 3rd – 5th, 2006 in San Jose, California, has added a cocktail reception for Friday evening. This is a chance for show goers to mingle with exhibitors in a social atmosphere and possibly discuss business over a cocktail. Entertainment will be provided by “The Motherfluxers” a trio comprised of framebuilding legends Brian Baylis on drums and Paul Sadoff on guitar with Rick Williams ( a non cyclist and Pauls regular bassist) who will be churning out surf/classic rock tunes. This should prove to be a night to remember!

The show is picking up steam largely from its impressive list of bicycle framebuilders that have already signed up for this one of a kind gathering. That’s not all that is keeping this show and its momentum moving forward. Articles in such publications as Velonews, Bicycle Retailer, Roadie International, Vintage Bicycle Quarterly and bicycletest.com have made this show a “must see” for spectators and exhibitors alike. This buzz was influential in True Temper/Alpha Q signing on as the shows first sponsor.

The 2006 show will be almost 4 times as large as the first show in part to show organizer Don Walker’s dedication to make this the best consumer related bicycle show on earth.
“This event is taking off so quickly, I expect all 100 booths to be sold out before Interbike which is still almost 6 months before our show dates. The list of builders who have signed up reads like a “who’s who” in bicycle framebuilding.”

The list of confirmed exhibitors is as follows:
Rich Adams, Ahrens Bicycles/Mike Ahrens, Joseph Ahearne, Accufit Designer/Bill Boston,
Brian Baylis, Badger Cycles/Rob Penell, Calfee Design/Craig Calfee, Matt Chester,
Co-Motion, Columbine Cycles/John Murphy, Columbus Tubing, Nick Crumpton,
Roland Della Santa, DeKerf Cycle Innovation, Mike DeSalvo, Jenny Frayer, Henry James, Independent Fabrication, Jonny Cycles/Jon Kendziera, Kaisei Tubing, National Insurance Professionals Corp, Mark Nobilette, Patrick Cycles/Greg Gardner, Bill Rider, Rivendell, Richard Sachs, Rock Lobster/Paul Sadoff, Charles Schlessinger, Soulcraft, Spectrum Cycles/Tom Kellogg, Strawberry/Andy Newlands, Bob Summersett, Jamie Swan, Sycip Design, Thursday Bicycles, True Temper/Alpha Q, Don Walker, J. Peter Weigle**, Vanilla Cycles/Sacha White, Vulture Cycles, Mike Zancanato, Zipp Speed Weaponry.
Note: ** Has committed to display, but not attend in person.
Also, Jonnycycles, if you have time you should come out riding in SF, it'd be fun, and repayment for riding around in your town. I'll try not to be sick this time

Oh, yeah, Don Walker, he's putting on the show. It's gonna be good too, lots of great builders are signed up.

Anyway, any SF or peninsula people want to ride down to the show with me? Takes me about 3 hours to get from SF to San Jose. Or we could take the train if it's raining or something...

Judah, are you planning on staying for the whole show or are you going to make it a daytrip? I'm thinking about going, and it would be much cooler to go to SF, then ride down with a group.

Is IF (Independent Fabrications) going to be there? I heard that the organizers were banning their application because they make too many bikes or something idiotic like that.

Don says that IF will *definitely* be there, he doesn't know where that rumor comes from.

Bob Parlee hasn't been returning phone calls.

I'd heard something similar, but it's hard to argue that what IF (or Rivendell) does is substantially different than what Don or Matt Chester do. Both of them make hand built machines. THe difference is that they have a team of people who do different parts of the job whereas many of the other hand builders do it all themselves, maybe farming out the paint job.

If that's the cutoff, so be it. But then it should be the North American Artisan Bicycle Show or something to that effect.

I guess this means that I'll have to put in all my custom bike orders before next march when all the builders are going to add a few months to their backlogs...nothing but dumpster bread and lentil soup until march. 'Tis the price of quaility, I suppose.

Please see my post above yours, that rumor is just that, a rumor, with no basis in fact. IF *will* be at the show as will many others.

I saw that Co-Motion is going to be there, and they make singles as well as tandems, but at that level are they artisans? What would Waterford be considered? I think its cool that non "industry" peeps can see this stuff upclose and personal. I'll be there fer shore.

Sorry to get people riled up with my IF (Independent Fabrications) question.

Don Walker was on the list earlier and was vehement that:
1- no big manufacturers were allowed and
2- no Asian builders were allowed.

So no Trek, Canondale, and I do remember IF and Co-motion falling into that crowd since they are no longer one man operations. But perhaps the rules are loosened a bit for the show to have more builders. I'm fairly sure that he won't allow any Asian builders though, something to do with his assertion that they are inferior. Italians welcome though.

what-is-the-big-deal???
the thread that you're replying to has the
list of participants and IF is listed, yet
you're asking (originally) if they'll be banned
from coming. many of the participants are
NOT one-man operations. what am i missing?

Actually I've read in other threads that Don was trying to get Japanese builders to come out for the show and Ceya was attempting to help in that regard. So that's bunk too.

Oops, wel excuuuuuse me. Lots of people on here were confused about the IF thing and whether Don Walker was letting them in. As for his anti-asian sentiment, I'm going off of what some framebuilding person emailed me, and what has been written on a framebuilding listserve I read a while back. No doubt the show can be a good one regardless of the idealogies a man who runs it has.

It sounds like someone is badmouthing Don, I know for a fact that he's been trying to get Keirin builders to come out and he told me directly that IF is an awesome operation and they will be there for sure. Sure, no large scale operations (taiwanese sweatshops) will be there, but it is, afterall, the handmade bicycle show.

And when did he *ever* say that? I've seen him state that mass-produced taiwanese bikes are inferior to custom-made bikes, but I've never seen or heard him say anything about nationality or race regarding a builder's talents. You sure are a gossipy, slanderous mother****er...
