Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

The Army Corps of Enginners is now estimating 3-6 months to get the water out.

Today's edition of Democracy Now has quite a lot of good info.

Nolageek, glad to hear your okay. I was wondering about all the Bikeforums people while watching the news report when the exodus started. I live here in Houston area, and it was scary seeing I-10 jammed full of cars heading into the Houston. Count me in on the Build nolageek a new bike fund.

I was in NOLA back in March for my honeymoon. I was down the road from the Superdome, about 7 blocks from the French Quarter. So for me, its a little hard for me to watch the coverage of NOLA. But its really hard to hear that hotels here in the Houston area are starting to kick "refugees" out. Yesterday, the news aired that the people staying the Superdome were going to be transferred to the Astrodome. About 20 minutes later the news was showing people walking, or driving up to the Astrodome for a place to stay.

I heard they just suspended boat and helicopter rescue to the city and that the superdome evac is suspended as well. Hearts and prayers and whatever else you can send to the people in NO.

evanyc, there are tons of crazy rumors right now, so i dont know what to believe. i have friends who were in charity yesterday with two very different stories, so i guess everything is up for grabs. i know a lot of the looting stuff is out of control, including the rumors of it. man, i always knew NO was crazy, but this is insane.

thanks to all of you for your best wishes. spidermike, thanks a ton for your support.

Nope. I heard today that Tulane University got fairly little damage. A few windows broken in, and 'very little water damage. Hardly any flooding" is what the Dean said today on CNN. They plan on having the University back up as soon as possible. He said he wouldn't rule out "by the end of the semester"

But who knows, really.

Although..... $DEITY knows I could use one here in Montgomery, AL. Gas is expected to go to 5.00 a gallon, and I dont know the city well enough to feel safe walking around by myself. I've been trying to find a used bike shop or bike co-op here, but so far nothing.

I'm posting some stuff on my blog, https://nolageek.com

BTW this isnt directed to you, turd. But I never meant to imply that losing my computer or bike was devestating... only that, in hindsight, I regret not taking them. I just never in a million years thought that this would actually happen... I mean, this storm was the boogeyman we've been told about for years. Yeah, we knew it was possible... but damn, it actually happened. Everyone in Cali knows the big one can take out the entire state.. but do you really expect it? If you did, would you stay? It's times like this that reminds us all (right now, those us us from NOLA especially) of just what is important. I left with what really mattered to me: myself and my cats. Everything else is stuff. Replacable...

Can I get another computer? Sure. Can I build another bike? Sure. Can I replace Lydia and Plato? Never.

but isn't it kinda natural to say "damn, I should have brought such-and-such?" If I didn't, how would accept losing every thing I own? :/ I'm not budhist, and if I was I don't think I could become enlightened overnight.

None of these is nearly as devastating and frequent as a hurricane. Having your house eaten by lava

Home is where your kitty is. If I lost everything else I could still be happy with just my kitty on my lap.

While I'd love some bike parts (I can't find a used bike store here anywhere!) I would of course like to mention that there are a LOT of people who are worse off than me. While my paychecks have stopped, I am living with friends who are spotting me until my work can sort payroll out. The redcross has stated that they are going to be depleted very soon. If you WOULD like to help me out, I will certainly pay you for at least shipping costs as soon as I can get some funds. I don't have rent to contend with right now, so I have will some extra $. (As soon as I get paid, probably 1-2 months and that's just going to be 1 pay period + an extra 2 weeks. Maybe? My payroll dept is under 6 feet of water right now.)

I tipped as many duckets as I could spare into the Red Cross. Happy to hear atleast one forum regular made it out above water.

This came across from a friend:
https://movies.crooksandliars.com/Cou...in-Walmart.wmv

News clip about the looting. Cops.. looting. Holy hell.

Blogs from New Orleans:

https://www.livejournal.com/users/interdictor/ Some people who have set up a military style outpost in a building, they are still in the city. Some pretty dark stuff about what it is like there.

https://www.livejournal.com/users/katrinacane/friends Consolidated blogs from NO people.

It looks like a really bad situation - it must be awful for everyone there.

I'd like to donate some bike parts. I don't know if I have anything you'd need, but let me know!

Am I the only one that thinks this is the most half-assed rescue attempt ever!? Am I missing something? How can we run out of food and water for these people? Why haven't we commandeered every greyhound bus, every commercial vehicle, every blackhawk helicopter possible and at least get everybody to dry land? Or do a fly-bye and dump supplies off? Did anyone see Ted Koppel go to town on the head of FEMA last night?
