Need help with singlespeed build...

I bought a $59 cheap flip-flop wheel from NYCBikes. It came with a 16 tooth cog.

I tried to use the wheel on one of my older Trek bikes, but it didn't work. The chain appears to be too small for the teeth on the cog.

Are there different sized chains, and if so which one should I get?

Thanks!
Andy

The chain you have on your trek is a 3/32" chain, commonly know as derailleur chain. You need a 1/8" chain, most popularly known as BMX chain.

You need a 1/8" chain to work with your cog, or you can buy a new 3/32" cog to work with the chain from your trek.

Sweet...thanks. Will a 1/8" chain work with the front chainrings, or would I have the opposite problem than I do now?

Yes. A 1/8" chain will work on 3/32" components, but not the other way round, because the 1/8" chain is 1/32" wider.

it will fit, but because it is a loose fit it will wear down the chainring faster. when it's time to get a new chainring, be sure to get a 1/8" size; it will last longer and run quieter. have fun!
