Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Anyone ever have this happen

So as I was riding along today, some people decide to step out into the road. This caused me to vear into a giant pothole- well the front wheel missed it, but the back wheel went right though. Anyway, 10 feet down the road I hear that always depressing hissing noise of all the air leaving my rear tire. So I stop, walk down to a nearby coffee shop, buy myself a cup, and proceed to sit outside and fix the flat.

So here is the curious part. I fixed it, got back on, rode off. This is when I realized my back wheel was lopsided. Fearing the worst, I figured that the pothole had bent the rim or at least knocked it out of true. So, I turn the bike upside down and set it next to a signpost for reference and spin it. Well, the wheel is perfectly fine, but for some reason when I put the tire back on there was an 8cm section or so that was sitting really low in the rim. Sort of like the beads hadn't engaged properly or something.

Does anyone know what I did wrong to cause this to happen?

hmm, gnomes, I didn't think of that. Perhaps I should consider these things more carefully in the future.

Gnomes steal stuff, especially underwear.

Anyway, you just need more air in it. It's hard to get right with a small pump.

Sometimes, but not always. The Panaracer Paselas on my wife's commuting bike are a pain to mount. Usually they go on fairly easily, but not evenly. Pumping them up hard doesn't solve the problem - you actually have to go around the tire and adjust it so it's sitting evenly on the rim.

Obviously this could only happen on a fixed gear bike.

You may have a deformed tire. Plenty of tires are out of round, out of the box.

What's scarey is that they are in round when in the box.

pour some soapy water around the bead/rim of the tire, then over inflate it, the tire should seat itself evenly all the way around the rim. (obviously this isn't a road side fix. who carries soapy water with them). anyways this is the method I use for tough tires

Sure, that happens all the time. I wouldn't say you did anything wrong, per se. You have to keep an eye out for pedestrians -- they do the darnedest things.

I heard urinating on your rims helps the bead seat properly.

Pulverized gnome, diluted with tapwater, makes an excellent tire seating solution.
