Messenger Bag for the Non-Messenger
Anyone have a suggestion for a medium sized messenger bag that can fit some clothes, a laptop in a own padded sleeve which I already have, and occasionally a camera and a newspaper and the requisite bike tools?
Nothing too huge but something comfortable for riding and that can carry OK when when it's pretty empty.
I've had a lot of "mock" messenger bags that aren't too good for acutally riding and figure it's time to step up to something more functional.

I have a large Timbuk2 that fits my laptop, shoes, shirt, towel, pump/tools, a lock and has a little bit of space left over. Depending on the size or your laptop, you might be able to get a medium instead of a large (I put my laptop inside a sleeve and then inside a carrying case).
In any case, YMMV.

search for Bags in this forum and youl see all the brands and options. I really liek freitag bags. Especially the ones with nice type and dull colors. One of a kind. BUT, ive only used their classic model in large and small.. not to great for riding. they have a messenger model but I havent used it. I just picked up a nice freight baggage bag at freewheel on hayes. Got sick of the freitags sliping and sliding.

CourierWare - made in USA, super high quality and they don't look all trendy and "messengy". I just made that word up. I'd get the optional shoulder pad because if you have a heavy load/rough road it can dig into your shoulder.

My Chrome bag was the worst fitting, most impractically designed bag I've ever owned... at least for riding. Never stayed centered on my back. My basic 9 year old Timbuk2 still reigns supreme. Although, I think they might be designed a little different now...

Yeah, I want a chrome bag right now, but they don't have any in stock (i'm exaggerating, they have all of two colors for left shoulder.)
Grrrr..... I'd totally get it too.

Try finding a bag that will hold a Dell Inspiron 2200, change of cloths (pants, shirt, socks, boxers) on top of:
Constitutional Law book
International Relations (2 books) on Monday, Wednesday, Friday
or
3 Revolutionary history books
Comparative Political systems (2 books) on Tuesday, Thursday.
Total weight feels like its around 30 lbs. currently in my ****ty backpack of painful hell demons who bruise my spine...

I love my Metropolis though. Fits good and works great. For heavy loads/groceries the buckle is essential.

I love my chrome. If only it had an A/C built into the piece that lays on my back. Then it would be absolutely perfect.

stick a piece of channeled, closed-cell foam between the liner and the shell, it helps a lot.

Thanks for the help. Do you mind telling me what that foam is? I really appreciate it.

I googled it and it looks to be the same stuff in yoga mats. Is that true? Now that I completely derailed this thread.

Yeah, I e-mailed them and I'm going to wait till I hear back from them before I spend money somewhere else. I'd prefer to buy direct, less hassle and more support to the company. So... until then...
Where would one find a piece of channeled, close-cell foam at?
