What do ya'll make of these wheels?
I'm either going to get a set from These guys or the IRO standard wheelset. These are cheap, but that makes me a little suspicious. Anyone used these wheels, or dealt with Ben's cycles? Am i better off going with the IRO? I hear nothing but good things about them.
King Among Runaways
I deal with Ben's all the time, they are my LBS.
Those wheels are nothing special at all, just suzue jr. hubs.
My first ever wheel set was a set of those and I rode them for over a year without incident. They're completely functional, albeit lowend, wheel set.
As far as wheel quality compared to the IRO, I am not sure.
As far as reputable business with great customer service, they're great.
The King of Town
I make scrap metal of those wheels!
everyone says to stay away from those specific suzue hubs, i have never used them so i can't say, but going from everyone else's story i would not use them. i ordered cranks from bens cycle on ebay once and they sent me the wrong ones. i emailed them and they sent out the right ones via priority mail and with a priority mail mailing slip already made out so i didn't have to pay to ship it back. they took care of it nicely, was their mistake though.
Yeah, the LBS put in a good word for the IRO set, but I can't pass up a deal, so I thought some investigation.
Those are loose ball bearing hubs (more maintenance, cleaning repacking, etc.), they have a really cheap look and feel.
IRO hubs seem much more solid. they are sealed cartridge bearings... smooth, low maintenance. IRO also has great customer service. I'd spend the extra $45 and get the IRO wheels.
I'm really impressed with the iro hubs. I've riden them since last years winter and there still soomth has butter. They may even make it thru this coming winter.
If you don't look good...
I've already posted about those hubs/wheelsets from Bens. I've been running a set on my second bike for a while now. Threads are good, the front axle is bent, a few spokes have come loose, the bearings have a bit of friction and are definitely low quality.
You get what you pay for... although, they are quite pretty LOOKING hubs... one spin and you'll know they really aren't.
Ben's is an awesome eBay shop to deal with, BTW.
