Latest GWB walkway info
I wrote the Port Authority to complain about the walkway closing the other day and I got this info back from them.... figured I'd pass it along....
best,
E/Roscoe
Thank you for your Internet inquiry about the pedestrian and bike walks at the George Washington Bridge. However, The Port Authority has begun construction on a project that will enhance the safety and security of the George Washington Bridge.
As of September 12, 2005, and continuing through summer 2006, the following sidewalk hours of operation will be in effect:
Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. until 9 p.m.
Friday, 6 a.m. until midnight
Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. until midnight
The north sidewalk will be in service from Monday, September 12, and continuing on or about-- Saturday, October 15. The south sidewalk will be in service from Sunday, October 16 through Friday, November 19. Signs will be installed at the entrances of both sidewalks to inform users which sidewalk will be open during each period. A new sidewalk schedule will be made available prior to November 19. Please visit our Web site at www.panynj.gov for updates and directions to sidewalks.
We understand that the bridge's sidewalk is used by many pedestrians and bicyclists, and we have limited the hours the sidewalk will be closed to the absolute minimum required to effectuate the work. Our primary objective in all construction is to ensure the safety of our customers. In this case, the work cannot proceed safely unless the sidewalk is closed at the earlier time.
We apologize for any inconvenience these changes may present and thank you for your continued patience and cooperation.

On Saturday, I was:
*pissed to find that the south walkway was closed.
*happy to find that the north walkway was open!
*pissed to find that the north walkway has so many f'ing stairs!
*annoyed at all the unfriendly road bikers who, with their dura ace and their campognolo and their ksyerium SL and their zip wheels and their spandex and their atmos and their aerobars, were all too cool to talk to a punk on a fixie with toeclips, carrying a loaded shoulderbag...

That'll be nice. Are they finally going to fillet or chamfer the walkway around the supports?
