    Step 1: Obtain suitable candidate

Well, it's official, I have a ss/fixed project on my hands, look what Mr UPS brought me today. To my surprise was a second rear wheel (I haven't checked how true), and pedals (not originally anticipated). Gonna love getting the hands dirty on this one

I'm jealous. My winter/beater/commuter SS project has been on hold for too long. I do have a line on a very cheap, pristine 3 spd sturmey archer hub, though. It's all about the chainline, right?

I may as well just jump in with both feet, right? I'm leaning towards fixed. Going to try an not give in to Instant Gratification and just buy a rear wheel 'ready to ride' --I think that would take some fun out of the project.

Step 2 is cleanup and evaluation. Whee!

Got my candidate yesterday. 1975 Motobecane Mirage ($20). Looks to be in pretty good condition. The paint's a little chipped, but no rust. The headset and bottom bracket seem to be solid, but I haven't looked too closely. If they're shot, I'll have some minor headaches dealing with the Swiss (bb) and French (hs) threading.

I have a Ross Gran Tour in the shop being rebuilt as a SS (I'm just starting my foray into SS/fixed), but this one I want to do by myself. (I sound like my two-year old. "Do it by self!")
