Kona Fixies
I was thinking about getting a fixed gear, as my friend has one along with his legs of steel. :p I was taking a look at the Kona website and saw a couple of cool ones, namely their main one (the Unit) and another really awesome one called the Humu Humu Nuka Nuka Apu'a Deluxe. Does anyone own either of those? Any good? What's the equivalent on a normal bike (I have a 21-speed, so is it like gear 8?)?

i have a unit and it is tits. but it's singlespeed, not fixed (or at least it shouldn't be). if you're riding trails on a fixed gear then you're a better man than i...

I'm a fixie/singlespeed newbie, so what's the difference? I'm guessing a fixie is directly connected to the back sprocket (like a BMX) and so whenever the wheel is rolling the pedals turn. Right? So what's a singlespeed?

Freewheel with only one gear, you can still coast but you only have one gear. Fixed means that when you stop pedaling, the wheel stops moving.

The name means 'triggerfish that has a nose like a pig' which is a name I'd be proud to have on my bike :-)

all fixed gears as singlespeeds, but not all singlespeeds are fixed gears.
(don't nobody say nothing about multispeed fixed hubs or two speed freewheels, sheesh) |
Whew. That was close.
I almost puked when I read the title, thinking that Kona, the rich my-dick-is-bigger-than-yours-peoples' show-off-bike-maker really made a fixie. The end of the world has not arrived yet. (To kona owners: they are okay as MTB's if you have superfluous money, just not for me and not as a fix) (to the OP in case it's still not clear: when you pedal backwards, a singlespeed ratchets, but a fixed gear goes backwards) |
apparently some are too cool to ride a kona

The Kona Unit is a sweet ride.

Hah, Kona has got to have some of the cooler people in the industry working there and their pro's (I've met only the cx ones) are super cool. Their bikes are pretty much standardly priced and well made, I don't see who shoved a Humu Humu Nuku Nuku Apua'a up your backside today but who knows.
