Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

How much you want to spend has a lot to do with it. If you want to go inexpensive, but something that works excellent, look at fixed gear frames from IRO, Kogswell, or Surly. IRO has an excellent fixed/single speed specific crank that works excellent. They also have excellent inexpensive components such as wheels, stems, handlebars, etc. However, it is difficult to put together one that is more inexpensive than a built bike from Tony at IRO.

building your own FG from scratch may not be cheaper, but the knowledge and pride of ownership is invaluable IMHO.

Building from scratch is never cheaper. Ever. But it's a hoot, and you get to bond with the half-finished bike in your bedroom.

It's been done for cheap. There was a thread with conversion cost breakdowns, and bostontrevor had a couple that were around $100. I've done a couple sub $200. That's a lot less than a new Mark V or Pista.
