Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Don Walker Handmade Bike Show Spoke Card

well i'm down to design something for don's convention if you all are.

let's make this the sign-up/input thread, and as i said in the other thread i'll be glad to corral all of the cards onto master sheets to facilitate printing/laminating.

SIZE:
i suggest 4" x 5" (standard postcard size) as that way you could get them 4-up on a sheet of us letter. is that too big?

COLOR:
i suggest b&w art as you can print it cheaper and it should be just as effective on colored paper.
if anyone else has any ideas put em up here and let's settle on a final size so we're all consistent.

TEXT:
here's the copy as it stands.
[b]The 2nd Annual North American Handmade Bicycle Show
March 3rd, 4th and 5th, 2006
San Jose Convention Center, South Hall
see the bicycles your dreams are made of...[b]
I suggest adding San Jose, CA
thoughts?

Once all is agreed we can get busy.

I sort of want to, but man I'm already tied up with two clients, a trunk show that I'm designing all print collateral for AND doing all the print collateral (including three editions of spokecards) for the BFFG.

Maybe I'll sneak this one in...

I'm looking forward to see what folkd come up with though.

Might I suggest a "hand lugged" spoke card?

Seriously, cut out a lugwork pattern on card stock, and paste it on top of the card around the borders before laminating. that way you have a 3-d ridged effect. could do 2 ends, or a headtube style lug around the entire border.

Would be more work of course, but after all this is the "Hand Made Bicycle Show" Not the "Kinkos Copy™ Bicycle Show"

postcard size seems a bit big. perhaps something smaller and if people wants to 'customize' the card that'd be cool, as long as it's within the size perimeter. Remember though, you'd have to cut all those lugs out so it'll be a ***** to Don who'd have it printed and cut so in keeping with the spirit of don's lugs, lets keep it simple and more 'form follows function.' Just my two.

4.25" x 5.5 is a quarter of us letter. if you printed 4-up and laminated the entire sheet you wouldn't have cut space between cards. two of the edges would not be sealed. that's why i suggested slightly smaller

I'm doing 4 cards a letter sized sheet. That's usually what the larger spokecards go at and are most common. Smaller ones are business card size but they don't fit well in the spokes.

You want a 4x5.

is "see the bicycles your dreams are made of" proper grammar? seems to be missing "that" or something?

Yes, 2006.

I actually was thinking the same thing about the phrase, when I read it this morning, it seemed odd. "That" would read better.

"See the bicycles that your dreams are made of"

im sorry to be a stickler, it does sound better now. it sort of flows a bit more, no? another little thing that might just be my overanalyzation of a simple little phrase, but if you've already dreamt about the bikes isn't it true then that you've already "seen" them in some respects? i don't mean to knock the phrase and i'm sure it's just me that finds nitpicky little things like that. just throwing it out there.

The "bird" can be changed. Not an issue.

I'll switch up the tagline too in a bit.

However, I did want to say this: the "bird" is sort of a rebellious thing I suppose, sort of a F! to the mass-produced markets, which is my take on it.

im thinking theres a concise and short way of showing how the bicycles that one will see at the show will be the materialization of the bicycles that one has seen in a dream. im beating my head against the wall though coming up with a tagline for it that is 10 or 12 words long... tough copy to play with!

bikes = made of dreams / made by hand.. some clever wordplay is needed however i'm at a loss right now.

Yeah, i can see where "that" fits in better for the tag line...i am totally open for suggestions...

Thanks again!

No biggie. As someone who makes things pretty for a living, I'm more than used to design iterations anc changes.

yeah, something like that. "your dreams handmade into reality" or "your dream bike hand made into reality" or something along those lines sounds nice. i like that it is "your" dream that is being made by hand into reality, this conveys the fact that a handmade custom bike is built to the riders specs, which is what makes the things so special. its a person's exact dream made into an actual object.

hmmmm.... "the dreams [that] bicycles are made of"? (just a simple turn of phrase, but somewhat interesting)

i'm really impressed what you guys have come up with on short notice - it's always fun to see imagination at work. it's funny, because i do something similar with sound... so for me to design (sound effects/mix etc.), it's no big deal, but when i watch someone create in a medium in which i'm completely out of my depth, i'm in awe. well done, doods.
