If you own a 53 or 56 IRO Mark V / Mark V Pro / Angus how tall are you?

Very interested in getting an Angus but have no clue on the height issue.

53 IRO here. 5'10"

mattface 10-17-05 07:45 PM

really? that sounds small to me. what's your standover heght?

610 10-17-05 07:47 PM

IRO bikes are very weird in sizing. I fit perfectly on a 55 but I'm not sure whether to go up or down.

jayrooney 10-17-05 08:05 PM

you should probably go for the 56.
i'm 5'10" and i had a 53 mark v. it was a little too small for me.
when i buy another IRO it will be a 56.

daveIT 10-17-05 08:07 PM

5'11" with a 56. Plenty of SO with regular shoes

nolageek 10-17-05 08:13 PM

Mine is a little small, but It's not too bad. Maybe I have short legs. I do need to do some tweaking on the stem length though. The standover is fine.

610 10-17-05 08:13 PM

'k I'll give the 56 a shot. I trust you guys. I did try a 56 Langster and it was way too big for me (my pubic bone rested right on top of the top tube) - but I'll take a chance.

SyntaxPC 10-17-05 08:26 PM

I'm just shy of 6'0" and I ride a 56cm Mark V. I've got about 1.5" of standover in bare feet (I'm to lazy to put my shoes on right now). It's a little bit small, but I jack my saddle up pretty high (almost 7" of seatpost extension). I also have a long stem, so it doesn't feel very cramped.

slopvehicle 10-18-05 12:33 AM

Hmm. I'm 5'10".

My first fixed conversion was a 53cm Bianchi w/ short stem. Too small.

My second fixed conversion is a 55cm Miyata with a medium / longer stem. Too big, but just slightly.

My geared road bike is a 54cm Miyata with a short stem. This fits the best.

I'd rather have a short bike with long stem. Can't go back from something that's just too damn big.

rottencommie 10-18-05 01:42 AM

I plan on buying an IRO soon, probably the Mark V
Any Mark V owners here who are 6'2 (and 32" inseam)?
I've got a 59cm Miyata conversion right now, and it fits pretty well though i would probably be better off with a slightly longer stem.
I really wanna go with an IRO frame, but i've heard more than once that their sizing is kinda weird. Also, I can't really go test ride one as I live in Tucson (and i haven't found any IRO dealers here) so hopefully i can get enough advice from riders of the same height to make a decision!

nine 10-18-05 07:18 AM

i have two - a 50 and a 53 - i stand 5 ' 6" with a 29" inseam. i think the 53 "fits" me better (i.e. i don't have to jack up the seat post like on my 50) but i prefer the feel of the smaller bike.

6'2" with a 32 inch inseam? you must be built like a gorilla. I'm 5'10 with a 32 inch inseam. No wonder 1 frame doesn't fit all. we'd both want the same standover, but you clearly want a much longer reach. It seems like a longer stem might not be sufficient to accommodate that much difference.

If you don't know your saddle height, take off your shoes, stand on a hard surface with your feet 10-inches apart, and measure between your legs (the tape measure should be right in the middle) from the floor to your pubic bone. Not your genitals. Hit the bone. Figure out how to do this using a thin, hardcover book and a metal tape.

Your floor-to-pubic bone measurement is your pubic bone height.

example: If you are 5 feet 9 1/2, your pubic bone might be 85cm. Your saddle height will be about 75cm.

Once you've determined your saddle height, you have a simple subtraction to determine a good frame size. "A good frame size" doesn't mean it's the only size for you. The whole purpose of sizing is too give you a comfortable riding position, and for most people that means getting the bars level with, or within a couple centimeters, of the saddle height. The lower the number you subtract, the higher the bars can be. In France or England in the '40s, you'd subtract about 15cm. In the case above, that would have that 5-foot 9 1/2 inch rider on a 60cm frame.

If that same rider got sized in 10 different bike shops, probably 5 of them would suggest a 54 to 55. One would say a 53, two would say a 56, and one would say a 57. The more expensive the bike, the more likely the size is to be small.

Granted most of the single/fixed machines are going to be a hellalot more aggresive on the angles, but PBH still a bit better measurement for these things. My bike guy's a couple inches taller than I am and we fit almost the exact same size frame. All sortsa lil & notsolil factors involved besides height.

Not criticism or nuttin, just sumpin to keep in mind.

Oh and, how much yall consider standover height in sizing a bike? (Should prolly start a new thread for that. Eh.)

I'm actually looking for something with the bare minimum of standover. As long as the jewels clear it should be fine, but I can't seem to get a frame that gets me as far back as I want to go behind the bottom bracket. A longer stem may help, but my legs don't feel right unless I'm well behind the BB, and with a long seat extension, and the seat all the way back it doesn't feel very solid. So I keep wanting bigger and bigger frames.

ralfonso 10-18-05 07:42 AM

56cm Mark V - I'm 5'8"

mattface 10-18-05 07:47 AM

hmmm. anyone around 5' 10" 32" with a 59cm IRO? I'm thinking about getting one myself, and I was thing 56, but now I wonder. I seem to like the same size frame as friends who are about 6'2"

FixedDrinks 10-18-05 08:26 AM

I'm 5'11 with about a 34" meas inseam. Fit's really comfortably. I ride a 59 IRO Mark V. A size 59 iro = 55 c-c, which is about spot on for my size if not a little small by the traditional formulas. Just make sure you handle the top tube length. Also if you plan to do any rides longer than 20 mi, and your not a yogi, you should condsider the drop from the top of the saddle to the top of the bars when sizing. If you have to crank the saddle up so high to get your proper leg extension, that the tops of the bars are 6" below the saddle you may have some comfort issues, unless, like I said your racing track or a yogi :)

abe1x 10-18-05 01:29 PM

5'10" and change, but with pretty short legs. 53 Iro (mark V pro) and it fits pretty well but I certainly could go bigger. 54 or 55 would probably be ideal, and 56 would probably work..

Lunigma 10-20-05 04:22 AM

I noticed a lot of you have a 32" inseam. I have a 32" inseam as well but i'm 5"7. is anyone else on here 5"7 (or near) with a 32". what iro do you ride? im afraid the reach will be too far and then i won't be able to reach.

Lunigma 10-20-05 04:27 AM

I think we all also want to avoid getting a frame too small and then having to stack up on spacers or going threw different stems. i think we should include our inseam and torso lenght. http://cherry.dcwi.com/cherry/info/fit_info/torso.html i would give my torso lenght but im at work and i have no rulers

mattface 10-20-05 06:10 AM

It sounds to me like quite a few who ride IROs feel they could have gone bigger. Maybe that is a big part of the risk of buying a frame mail-order, but maybe with IROs it might be a good rule to go one bigger than you think.

untitled 10-20-05 10:08 AM

they measure center to top, no? so a size 59 is a 55 c-c.

edited to add they do list this on the geometry page.

Travis Bickle 10-20-05 10:13 AM

5'10", 32" inseam on a 53cm Mark V. Good standover and my shop recomended going a little small for a city bike. 80mm stem with bullhorns, love it.

sers 11-05-05 01:03 AM

I know given height/inseam measurements aren't exact, but I am really smack dab in the middle of 5'7" and 5'8" I have 30" inseam. I ended up buying a 50cm Mark V with a 110mm stem instead of the 53. I figured that it would probably be more comfortable, better suited for the city and maybe a little lighter. I guess I'll find out next week.
