I'm having a really hard time finding 1" quill stems with a removable face plate. I would love to switch between my drops and my risers, but there doesn't seem to be anything out there other than those ugly profile stems.
my other option is getting a "modern" threadless stem and one of those nashbar quill 1" to 1 1/8" adapters. they look kind of lame, though.

Salsa has (had) a nice 1" quill with the SUL pop-top. I bought mine two years back but have subsequently moved on to threadless fork.

the newer salsa sup's have removeable faces. they stopped making the quilled ones for a bit, but the site promises their return next year.

that is 80 dollars well spent though. those stems are really unbeatable and worth every penny. a lot of track racers use them because they are so stiff. check ebay perhaps?

just buy any-old quill. when you wanna swap bars, swap quills. easy.

i disagree 80 bucks is well spent on a stem.

What length are you looking for?
I have this 90mm/-17 one that I was going to put on Ebay.
Let me know if you want it.

$80 sounds a bit pricey (as in gouging), think I paid $30 for mine via Performance. I should toss it up on eBay but I have a problem with letting go of parts.

It is no worse than my Mutant- and I'm rocking a 14cm. It just LOOKS flexy

Frankly, back to the OP- there is always the option of buying a "convertor" for $12 that allows use of a threadless stem on a threaded fork. It aint the most elegant way of running things, but it will allow for infinitely more options- particularly if someone needs a hideous rising stem.

My LBS found me a CODA branded 1" quill stem with a removable faceplate. Not the prettiest thing but I think it cost me $5 so I was pretty happy.
